January 26, 2023 // According to a release dated November 18 issued by the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, “every single worker at the store signed union authorization cards in support" of an election to determine whether the 15 BAM employees in the Leesburg store would join UFCW Local 400 so as to collectively bargain contracts. Still, UFCW national press secretary Brian Doherty told PW in an email after yesterday’s election, “unfortunately, the vote did not go our way.” Doherty did not offer further details.

The decisions by about 200 non-supervisory headquarters employees in May, and another roughly 200 in the New Mexico state office in February and in the Taos and Rio Puerco field offices there last spring, were also spurred by the Biden administration’s efforts to undo the Trump BLM reorganization. He got big cheers from the crowd when he mentioned his plan for student debt relief, which will lower loan balances for millions of borrowers – “a game changer” for many Americans, he said. Biden praised his administration’s track record on the economy, pointing out that 10 million jobs have been created since he became president. He also said more than 220 million Americans have been vaccinated against COVID-19 since he took office.

MetroAccess union goes on strike
August 2, 2022 // A MetroAccess union strike on top of problems on the Red Line may complicate commutes in the D.C. region. Members at Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 that were employed by Transdev voted roughly four weeks ago to begin a strike at the Hubbard Road Garage. That particular location, the union said, has been over 100 workers short “for over a year and a half.” Brian Wivell, a spokesperson for Local 689, said that a mix of road supervisors, mechanics and other workers are expected to strike Monday morning with some expected impacts.
