Unionization Wave Hits Nonprofit Sector
December 17, 2025 // ASeveral key economic factors are driving this current union organizing trend, including inflation and job security. In this environment, employees are motivated to seek the protections that higher pay and increased benefits offer. However, about one-third of nonprofit museums and cultural institutions are also struggling to confront the loss of government grants or contracts. More than half of museums reported fewer 2025 visitors than in 2019, according to a Novemberreport by the American Alliance of Museums. In spite of these conflicting economic difficulties, employees are continuing to push back, feeling that they have been taken for granted for many years. Bottom line: unions continue to seek out new groups of workers to organize as their traditional targets, such as manufacturing and production jobs, wane or move overseas. Nonprofit employers would be well advised to stay engaged with their employees, keep an eye on employee morale, and look for ways to reward employees' hard work even when funds are scarce.

September 17, 2025 // According to the State Employment Relations Board’s 2025 Annual Report, there have been 203 unfair labor practice charges filed statewide. "Out of those 203 charges, the board found probable cause in eight matters," said Mona Reed, the board's executive director.
Philadelphia teachers prepare for possible strike if a deal is not reached by Aug. 31
August 8, 2025 // The union is asking for an end to the school district's controversial sick leave policy, which it says punishes teachers for using sick days and requires them to meet with their principal after taking three days. The union also wants paid parental leave, extra pay for oversized classes and the restoration of school libraries. The union's president, Arthur Steinberg, said teachers don't want to go on strike, but the union, which represents nearly 14,000 teachers, is "not even close to working out a deal with the school district.

May 18, 2025 // New York’s most comprehensive online database of state and local government union contracts has been updated with the latest collective bargaining agreements for local teachers, police, firefighters, libraries, and public authorities. Among the 1,006 new local government and school district public employee union and employment contracts on SeeThroughNY.net, the Empire Center’s transparency website, are 126 public school teacher association contracts, 124 Superintendent contracts, 95 police contracts, and 18 firefighter contracts.
Thousands of LA County workers go on strike over alleged unfair labor practices
April 30, 2025 // The strike could impact several services, including the county's non-urgent health clinics, public libraries, wildfire clean-up services, trash pick-up and homeless encampment enforcement. The union is citing 44 unfair labor practices they claim have gone unanswered for six months. They are calling on the county to stop contracting out and instead increase wages and fill vacancies.
