June 25, 2025 // The opposition to independent contractors was frustratingly predictable. Most of it, as usual, came from unions—including the AFL-CIO, Teamsters and IBEW. Others who testified against us were a representative of the union-affiliated National Employment Law Project (you may recall us crushing them in Congress last month), a couple of union-side lawyers, and a guy from the Workplace Justice Lab at Rutgers University, whose stated mission includes building unions.

February 12, 2025 // Last year, AFGE Council 222 filed a complaint with HUD's Inspector General and members of Congress. It said the app made it impossible for HUD to inspect nearly all of its five million housing units across the country every five years, as required by law. There hasn't been much response so far. But Gaines hopes that will change now that DOGE has asked for a review of all contracts.

October 1, 2024 // This year, UNITE HERE says it is once again mobilizing its members and plans to knock on more than 3 million doors in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina and Michigan “to ensure that Kamala Harris wins the presidency.” In Wisconsin, the Laborers are building political messaging into a union project to engage members more closely, “connecting union members with other union members,” Miller said, to explain how negotiations affect wages and health and retirement benefits, as well as the importance of increasing union representation.
Federal worker union shifts presidential endorsements to Harris
July 31, 2024 // The American Federation of Government Employees was the first federal employee union to officially endorse Harris, noting that the vote by the union’s National Executive Council was “unanimous.” Couched as a “reaffirmation” of the union’s previous endorsement of Biden last summer. AFGE touted Harris’ work as a senator to protect federal employees at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as her tenure as co-chairwoman of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment, a panel convened by Biden as part of his effort to strengthen labor unions in both government and the private sector.

July 24, 2024 // As president, Biden instituted reforms aimed at rebuilding the federal workforce, both increasing recruitment at federal agencies and restoring rights taken away during Trump’s first term in office. Shortly after taking office, he rescinded Schedule F, an abortive—though not abandoned—effort to reclassify tens of thousands of federal employees in policy-related jobs into the government’s excepted service, effectively making them at-will employees.

July 24, 2024 // Yet some notable union holdouts remain, suggesting Harris will still have some work to do to win over other working-class voters. On Monday, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the biggest federation of unions in the U.S. and a longtime supporter of President Joe Biden, announced its endorsement of Harris.
