A Boeing strike could give the state’s UI fund a much bigger test
September 24, 2026 // This year, benefits paid for by employers and traditionally meant for workers who lose work through no fault of their own became available to people who are employed but who choose not to work, too. And the Washington state Employment Security Department told me that as of Sept. 14, 174 striking workers have been paid benefits so far in 2026, accounting for 814 paid weeks and $604,491 from the Unemployment Trust Fund. That is up surprisingly little from Aug. 5, when ESD reported 151 paid claimants, 741 paid weeks and $565,714. (I say “little” recognizing that even a dollar given to a person choosing not to work takes away from a fund that has been relied on as a safety net for workers who lose their jobs.)
Boeing’s engineers union backs latest contract offer
September 23, 2026 // SPEEA, the union representing Boeing engineers and technical employees, said on Wednesday that they recommended their members accept Boeing's latest contract offer. Boeing and its engineering union reached a contract agreement this month, a four-year offer that includes higher general wage increases than the first offer which SPEEA members rejected in a August 21 vote.
Boeing offers 10% raise to WA workers to head off union strike
September 14, 2026 // Boeing has issued its final contract proposal to SPEEA, covering over 16,000 engineers and technical workers. The deal offers an immediate 10% wage hike upon approval, a 4% raise in 2027, and guaranteed 4% minimum annual increases through 2030. SPEEA leadership is advising members to vote "Yes," though the official schedule for the ratification vote is yet to be announced.
Boeing union ready to strike after rejecting contract offer
August 24, 2026 // These are members of Boeing’s SPEEA union, which represents 13,000 engineers and 4,000 technical workers. The contract offer would have boosted the average pay for those who design Boeing planes by nearly 30 percent over four years. They would have received three extra days of paid leave, lower limits on mandatory overtime, and more opportunities for virtual work.
Boeing engineers, technical workers reject contracts, could strike after fall deadline
August 24, 2026 // In voting results released Friday, members of SPEEA’s Professional Unit, which represents nearly 13,000 engineers and scientists at Boeing, rejected the proposed contract with a 64.3% no vote, 7,238 to 4,027. Members of SPEEA’s Technical Unit, which represents more than 4,000 analysts, designers, technicians, and other specialists, rejected their proposed contract with a 71.9% no vote, 2,795 to 1,094.
Oregon and Washington workers may soon be able to claim unemployment benefits when they go on strike
April 7, 2025 // Oregon’s measure would make it the first state to provide pay for picketing public employees — who aren’t allowed to strike in most states, let alone receive benefits for it. Washington’s would pay striking private sector workers for up to 12 weeks, starting after at least two weeks on the line.
Union investigates claims that Boeing is sending work to non-union locations
January 23, 2025 // Union officials worry that the company is using a company-wide downsizing mandate to send work away from the Seattle area, where SPEEA represents 17,000 Boeing workers. In October, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company would cut roughly 10% of its workforce, or 17,000 jobs, "to align with our financial reality." The U.S. planemaker recorded nearly $8 billion in losses through the first nine months of 2024. The company is expected to report more losses when it releases its year-end results on Tuesday.
Boeing to lay off over 2,200 workers in US states of Washington and Oregon
November 18, 2024 // Boeing will lay off more than 2,200 workers in the U.S. states of Washington and Oregon, according to filings posted on Monday, as part of the debt-heavy U.S. planemaker's plan to cut 17,000 jobs, or 10% of its global workforce.
