IATSE to Resume Contract Talks With Studios on June 24

June 11, 2024 // IATSE, along with Teamsters and the Basic Crafts, are also seeking new funding models for the Motion Picture Industry Health and Pension Plan, which serves all of their members. As the plan is funded by studio and union contributions that are based on the number of active film/TV productions per year, the MPI is facing an estimated $670 million shortfall over the next three years due to contributions lost during last year’s strikes. Along with wages, Teamsters 399 is expected to push for minimum staffing requirements for drivers on Hollywood productions, as well as protections against automated vehicles being used.

Strike Halts Work At Many SE Wisconsin Construction Sites

June 10, 2024 // Roughly 800 members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 139 went on strike last Saturday for better pay. That’s caused work stoppages at construction sites in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Washington and Ozaukee counties. Some of the job sites where work came to a standstill include a parking garage near Froedtert Hospital, apartments on the east side of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee County Human Services building and a new recreation center at Marquette university, union officials said.

CONNECTICUT: Senator’s Dual Roles Raise Ethical Questions Amid Legislative Decisions

April 29, 2024 // Citing the need to pay people “a fair wage and a fair pension,” Sen Hochadel argued that the state must provide higher wages — which already exceed the private sector — to address state job vacancies. This stance suggests a dual agenda: to attract job candidates to the state and swell the ranks of her union with more dues paying members. During her remarks, the Senator acknowledged her members, expressing appreciation for their contributions to the state of Connecticut and urged her colleagues “to vote yes.” While this advocacy may not be surprising, she also serves as the president of the Connecticut American Federation of Teachers (AFT) — one of the unions involved in the negotiations. AFT represents a broader group than just teachers. The union also includes dues paying members who are state employees in the executive and judicial branches, as well as staff at state colleges, universities and UConn Health.

Strike at MASS MoCA end after union members ratify a deal with museum management

March 29, 2024 // The union, created in March 2021 under Local 2110 United Auto Workers, had been negotiating with museum management since October. As part of these negotiations, MASS MoCA offered to raise its minimum hourly wage by a dollar to $17.25, according to a March 1 press release from the museum. The union had proposed $18.25. “Equity and wage increases for MASS MoCA’s staff have never been a matter of if, but a matter of how fast,” Director Kristy Edmunds wrote in a statement on Wednesday. The museum said new wages will go into effect within 30 days of the agreement.

UAW shakeup leads to reassignments amid criticism of a new leader

February 29, 2024 // While Fain's letter suggested a calm transition of duties, a more explicit version of events was posted Wednesday in a statement on the website and Facebook page run by the activist group Unite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD), which began as a dissident group backing Fain and Mock during their elections to leadership a year ago. It describes itself as "a grassroots movement of UAW members in good standing, united in the common goal of building a more democratic and fighting union." The statement said 11 of the 14 members of the UAW International Executive Board (IEB) had voted to reassign departments overseen by Mock, including departments now headed by English and Dickerson.

Denver Art Museum workers will form union to combat wage, safety concerns

January 16, 2024 // Denver Art Museum officials confirmed that they received a request this morning for voluntary recognition of a union from “some members of its staff.” “The museum is aware that unionization among museums has been occurring more frequently in the US and is open to working with its employees to explore the best path forward,” wrote communications manager Andy Sinclair. “If unionization is the path they choose, the museum will work within that system.

The workers' primary goals include wage increases to keep pace with the soaring cost of housing in Los Angeles, quality and affordable health insurance and humane workloads, according to Unite Here Local 11, which staged walkouts at hotels across Southern California and Arizona over the summer.
