Vanderbilt University does not have to turn over graduate students’ private data to union, court rules
December 4, 2024 // “The National Labor Relations Board…often, as part of unionization elections, requires employers to hand over to union officials employees’ private information,” says NRTW Vice President Patrick Semmens. He adds that the NLRB recently “expanded the information to include personal email and cell phones with no way to assure the information isn’t misused or shared with other third parties.” “This happens even if individual workers object and say they do not want their personal information given to union officials, who in many instances have used such information in nefarious and even illegal ways,” Semmens says.

MEMBERSHIP IN SEIU 1000, CALIFORNIA’S LARGEST STATE EMPLOYEES UNION, FALLS BELOW 50 PERCENT
June 20, 2024 // In May 2018, the month before Janus was decided, 96,229 state employees worked under SEIU 1000 contracts, effectively all of whom had union dues or fees deducted from their paychecks by the state. The next month, following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the number of represented employees with union payroll deductions had dropped to 58,953 — a membership rate of 61.4 percent — reflecting the loss of fee payments from nonmembers rendered unconstitutional by Janus.
Union members sound alarm after Google fires key workers
June 12, 2024 // “As members of the LIS team, these workers are responsible for handling and responding to requests for user data made by law enforcement, the courts, and members of the public, as well as creating and operationalizing the programs and policies that safeguard user data and maintain compliance with Google’s legal obligations,” the Alphabet Workers Union wrote in a May 24 statement. Since Bloomberg published a September 2023 report revealing law enforcement officials often use search warrants to gain access to Google’s location and search data made by individuals involved in “nonviolent cases” (and those who had no involvement in the crime they are investigating), Google has appeared to further distance itself from withholding that sensitive information. This may explain Google's decision to shrink the Legal Investigations Support team.

Commentary: SEIU 1000 SECURITY BREACH EXPOSES UNION HYPOCRISY ON GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY
April 30, 2024 // Imagine our shock when news broke recently that SEIU 1000, one of the largest unions in California, had been the target of a ransomware attack that led to more than 308 gigabytes of union data being captured by the hackers. This included membership information, such as Social Security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and birthdates. Where did SEIU 1000 get this information to have it leaked in the first place? Much of the data was included on lists given to it by the state of California, per the union’s bargaining agreement, on a regular basis.
Opinion: Demand more from CT public sector union officials
April 15, 2024 // As soon as you’re hired, the state sends your contact information, including your home address, to a union you’ve never joined and to union officials you’ve never met. The union also has the right to meet with you for at least 30 minutes, even one-on-one, to ensure you join and start paying dues. After that, every three months, union officials can get your updated personal phone numbers and email address from the state agency where you work, regardless of whether you become a union member. If you can withstand union officials’ high-pressure marketing pitch, you may face coercion once on the job.
