CTU alleges rival union conspired with the boss in fight over low-wage CPS employees
February 3, 2026 // In an escalation of an ongoing turf war over low-wage school district employees, the Chicago Teachers Union has accused the Chicago Board of Education of conspiring with a rival union to undermine its bargaining unit. The allegation is the latest example of ongoing acrimony between the two once-allied progressive labor unions, a fracture with major implications for city politics and for Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. Local 73 of the Service Employees International Union called the accusation of conspiring with the boss “unfortunate, baseless, and unsupported by any evidence” and said its goal was only to improve the wages and working conditions of the workers.
SEIU Illinois spends just 3% of members’ money representing workers

ILLINOIS: SEIU announces ‘unprecedented wage increases’ for park district workers
April 29, 2024 // SEIU workers will get unprecedented wage increases, according to a statement from the union, pending ratification of the tentative agreement. Dabrowski said ordinary Chicagoans are going to have to pay a lot more for government employees. “All these workers want big, big raises. They have guaranteed multi-year contracts when they sign these things. Many of them get guaranteed pensions,” Dabrowski said. SEIU Local 73 President Dian Palmer expressed heartfelt gratitude to Johnson and his staff for their instrumental role in facilitating the agreement. The SEIU endorsed Johnson for mayor and donated more than $4 million to his campaign.
U of I service employees set to vote on strike authorization
May 3, 2022 // It would be the first strike by university service employees since 2013, and that strike prompted the university to declare its first-ever civil service emergency. If a strike were to occur, campus trash cans would not be emptied, bathrooms in university buildings would not be cleaned and food in dining halls would not be made.
