November 5, 2024 // In the meantime, the clerks union that consists of 65 members is adding its voice of malcontent. "Our position currently right now is that we are the lowest paid Butte-Silver Bow employees. Our employees are 12-13 on up, and what we’re looking for is making sure that these have a livable wage and making sure that they have health insurance and those types of things," says Jennifer Kerns, a county administration assistant and vice president of the Local 372. Kerns says so far, union members have voted down the current contract twice and will take their third and final vote next week. In her time with the union, she says she has never seen the clerks vote down a contract.
Boeing strike ends as workers accept new contract
November 5, 2024 // Boeing has said the average annual machinists' pay at the end of the new four-year contract will be $119,309, up from $75,608 previously. The pay increase may add $1.1 billion to Boeing's wage bill over the four years, while a $12,000 ratification bonus for each union member could result in another $396 million in outflows, according to analysts at Jefferies. More than 26,000 union members voted, putting turnout near 80%.
Boeing workers vote to reject contract deal, extending strike

Strike ends as union at Textron Aviation in Wichita approves new contract
October 22, 2024 // A simple majority of the roughly 5,000 workers represented by the union was needed to approve the contract. The union did not immediately release results of the vote, which was held Saturday and Sunday at its headquarters in south Wichita. "We know aircraft in Wichita," Clint Shockley, the business representative for the union, said in a statement. "We also know family, survival, and our members' rooted values here. Local 774 members have shown that through collective action and won."

Boeing will lay off 10% of employees as a strike shuts down airplane production
October 14, 2024 // About 33,000 union machinists have been on strike since Sept. 14. Two days of talks this week failed to produce a deal, and Boeing filed an unfair-labor-practices charge against the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. As it announced layoffs, Boeing also gave a preliminary report on its third-quarter financial results — and the news is not good for the company. Boeing said it burned through $1.3 billion in cash during the quarter and lost $9.97 per share. Industry analysts had been expecting the company to lose $1.61 per share in the quarter, according to a FactSet survey, but analysts were likely unaware of some large write-downs that Boeing announced Friday — a $2.6 billion charge related to delays of the 777X, $400 million for the 767, and $2 billion for defense and space programs including new Air Force One jets, a space capsule for NASA and a military refueling tanker.

October 1, 2024 // Giving UI benefits to striking workers would create an imbalance between business and labor, make strikes more frequent and lengthy, increase costs and services for consumers and hurt other workers in the state who are told they can rely on unemployment benefits. Giving fund dollars to people choosing not to work should offend all Washington state workers. These union-favor bills failed to pass the finish line in the last moments of the 2024 session, but big labor promises the policy proposal will be back. I hope lawmakers aren’t into it, especially after being able to clearly see what a Boing strike could do to the fund.
House Seeks Information from Unions on Policies to Prevent Corruption

These questions apply both to each union’s headquarters as well as its locals. U.S. House Subpoenas UAW Local over Controversial Resolution Chairwoman Foxx cites specific examples of corruption for each union. For example, in the Teamsters letter, she cites a state senator from Illinois who was indicted for taking more than $245,000 in fraudulent income and other benefits from Teamsters Joint Council 25 while purporting to be a union organizer.
