    July 3, 2024 // These layoffs have been looming for weeks, spurred by an operating loss of $64 million for the fiscal year that ended Sunday. Jennie Olson, who both writes grants and contracts for OHSU and is the president of the AFSCME Local 328 which represents thousands of OHSU workers, told KOIN 6 News the number of layoffs could potentially rise to 500 members.

ONA claims doing so is a violation of HB 2697, which “sets minimum safe staffing levels for nurses and allied healthcare workers.” “Providence submitted staffing plans to OHA for approval that were never agreed upon by nurses and were unilaterally adopted by management without the required approval from the nurse staffing committee,” the nurses union said in a public statement. “According to OHA, this action violates Oregon’s staffing law, as ONA-represented nurses have been claiming.

    Nurses union to pay HCA Healthcare $6.2M over 2020 strike

    June 21, 2024 // A local unit of SEIU has been ordered to pay HCA Healthcare's Riverside Community Hospital $6.2 million for conducting a 10-day strike in 2020. An arbitrator last month ordered the payment after it was found last year that nurse labor union SEIU Local 121RN violated a collective bargaining agreement with the hospital by holding the strike in June 2020.

    Providence claims nurses union is asking travel nurses to turn down contracts during strike

    June 17, 2024 // Hospital leadership is referring to an ONA letter, which calls on "all nurses to stand in solidarity" and to "not accept travel nurse contracts scheduled to start in June or July." Providence announced last week that their facilities would remain open during the strike and that they'd fill those gaps with replacement workers. "The world of replacement nurses, if they feel intimidated or if they're feeling like this isn't a place that they are welcome to come, or safe to come, then it's possible that they wouldn't choose to accept those contracts and that could negatively impact patient care," Gentry said.

They would join clinical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians, optometrists and other employees. The Committee of Interns and Residents is the largest resident and fellow physician union in the county, representing more than 32,000 medical workers.

    April 16, 2024 // The nurses' union has posted an online petition asking for residents to sign. As of Tuesday afternoon, 638 people have signed the petition, which claims, "In the last 3 years, the hospital lost over 100 registered nurses, largely because nurse wages and benefits have not kept up with other area hospitals." Harklewood said that 116 Registered Nurses at the hospital are prepared to strike if nurses and the hospital don’t come to an agreement on a new contract.

    Sault Saint Marie nurses strike for fair pay amid negotiation standoff

    April 16, 2024 // "Overall, the movements we have shown throughout the negotiations have been monumental and where the MNA began was an unrealistic starting position. For example, when our negotiations got off the ground in November, the MNA was looking for top of scale nurses to be paid at $51.30 per hour in year one alone. Their most recent proposal from earlier this month was $48.92 ($2.38 difference). By comparison, we first offered $40.85 in January, increased to $42.19, and on April 3, the Medical Center increased again to $44.77. That means the Medical Center increased its offer by $3.92 over a similar time period. And they responded to this by walking away from the table.
