Raises for one union not funded in WA budget, leading to finger-pointing
May 19, 2025 // Leaders for the WPEA say a failure to fund a new contract could impact thousands of state government employees such as food safety officers, commercial vehicle enforcement officers, and wildfire fighters. Some contracts for WPEA locals were funded, including for employees at the Yakima Valley College and for Senate and House Democratic legislative staff. But WPEA contracts for general government and higher education employees, which represent the bulk of the union, were not. Many state agencies employ a mix of those represented by WPEA or WFSE.

December 2, 2024 // The hospital highlighted its “generous proposal,” crafted over two months’ worth of “good faith” negotiations, according to a hospital press release. The current offer includes a $19 million wage and pension package over three years. That package would sport a minimum 5.5% wage increase for union employees, with some receiving higher bonuses, as well as low-cost health plans for workers. A strike, however, would cost the hospital at least $9 million just to continue operations as normal, and striking workers would not be paid for any shifts missed, Sullivan said.

June 16, 2023 // "The union wanted to preserve its right to strike again next year," Simon said. "We felt as though the agency, our clients, the people we serve, the students, the parents, had all gone through enough trauma. And so we did not want to give the right to strike again next year." Simon said the state budget provided enough money to pay the workers $18.45 per hour, but Oak Hill extended an offer of $18.50 and an "enhanced" retirement package, but the union did not accept the offer. While the workers have been on strike, temp workers and members of the Oak Hill administration team have been staffing the facilities, costing the company "probably $150,000 more a day" above normal operating costs, according to Simon. Oak Hill negotiations have proven to be especially sticky, according to Oak Hill CEO Barry Simon. After nearly eight hours of talks, negotiations between Oak Hill and the union stalled. Of the 1,700 workers who were on strike, 700 are from Oak Hill. The others are spread between Mosaic, Whole Life, Network, Caring Community and Alternative Services, Inc.

White Plains Hospital Workers Seek Vote to Remove Unpopular SEIU 1199 Union from Workplace
February 10, 2022 // “These healthcare workers have bravely worked over the past two years under exceptionally challenging circumstances. We should honor that devotion by respecting their right to remove an unwanted union from their workplace,” commented National Right to Work Foundation President Mark Mix. “We hope the NLRB will promptly schedule a vote and not allow SEIU officials to engage in legal trickery to delay the decertification election these hospital workers have requested.”
