Opinions | The WGA strike is part of a recurring pattern when technology changes
May 31, 2023 // Once again, writers and other workers in Hollywood are facing technological change, this time regarding the use of artificial intelligence in projects covered by the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA). The WGA has proposed that any MBA material be produced by a person, with writing credits to a human, and that no AI be used in the production of literary material for a film. The goal is to secure the jobs and pay of writers, with both initial minimum payments during production and residuals for back-end exhibition. The WGA, which has stronger residuals security and higher payments with studios than with streamers, is looking for closer parity, especially with streaming’s rise in popularity since the coronavirus pandemic. Could AI help script a sitcom? Some striking writers fear so. In a recent example of where the agreements have fallen short, Netflix forced the WGA into arbitration by withholding residuals, ultimately owing $64 million in backdated payments while still refusing to shell out $13.5 million in interest.
CUNA Mutual workers go on strike as contract negotiations stall
May 22, 2023 // The union is characterizing the walkout as an unfair labor practice strike — a significant distinction because, if upheld by the National Labor Relations Board, it would prevent the company from permanently replacing strikers. Members authorized a five-day strike initially, Bartlett-Mulvihill said. “Could it go longer?” she added. “Absolutely. If we see no movement at the table from the employer, you know, those are options that the members are looking at.” The walkout comes as CUNA Mutual is in the midst of rebranding its business under the name TruStage, reflecting an expansion beyond its original customer base of credit unions. Bartlett-Mulvihill and Joe Evica, the union’s chief steward at CUNA Mutual, told reporters at a picket-line news conference that the principal issues remained job security, wages, pension benefits, health care and a pay equity review for union employees, including stronger efforts to expand the diversity of the workforce. The union has also sought to maintain remote work policies that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The union has criticized company management for its handling of contract negotiations, which began in February 2022.
Group behind Starbucks’ unionization runs into its own labor problem
May 12, 2023 // The union behind the organization of Starbucks suffered an ironic role reversal Wednesday when its employees went on strike in a push for higher wages. The workers hit the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) with many of the same accusations an affiliate of the union has hurled at Starbucks and other restaurant employers. The employees, members of the SEIU’s Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), charged the parent group with delaying contract negotiations and trying to bust the subordinate union.

May 9, 2023 // If the strike were to move forward it would be a first in the union’s history with the company. It is currently set for May 19th. OPEIU Local 39 represents roughly 450 of the company 4,200 employees.
Thousands of students scramble to get to school amid Marlborough bus driver strike
May 9, 2023 // More than 3,800 Marlborough students who regularly take the bus to school were forced to find other modes of transportation Monday as dozens of bus drivers went on strike. The bus drivers union and the private bus company that serves three districts west of Boston failed to reach a contract agreement Sunday night, prompting more than 50 school bus drivers to take to the picket line, demanding fair wages, better hours, healthcare, and retirement benefits.

Judge Gardephe did not find the case convincing enough to transform the Wyckoff and Cox suit into the front-office employee equivalent of Flood's historic triumph; instead, he reinforced that teams were behaving within their rights set forth by MLB's antitrust exemption. "Because scouts' work has a direct and critical effect on the selection of players who will participate in the games that the public will watch," Gardephe opined, "their role cannot be characterized as 'wholly collateral' or 'incidental' to the business of professional baseball."
Long Island teachers remain without contract after 12 years
May 8, 2023 // Long Island teachers on April 23 protested over the ongoing, 12-year contract negotiation impasse between the Lawrence Teachers’ Association (LTA) and the Lawrence Union Free School District. The Lawrence Union Free School District is located in Cedarhurst, New York. The previous contract ended in 2011, and teachers in the school district have continued to work under the terms of the expired contract due to the prolonged contract negotiations.
Unionized Apple store workers want you to start tipping them
May 5, 2023 // Workers at Apple's first unionized store in suburban Baltimore are pushing for a tipping system. The proposal calls for customers to tip in increments of 3%, 5%, or a custom amount. It's part of a series of new proposals from the union ahead of contract negotiations.
American Airlines Pilots Vote to Authorize Strike Amid Contract Negotiations
May 2, 2023 // Thousands of American Airlines pilots are standing their ground, threatening to go on strike right before the busy summer travel season gets underway. More than 96% of American's pilots participated in the vote for a strike and 99% of them voted to allow the union to call one, the Allied Pilots Association said Monday.
