Novato city workers plan to strike for 2nd day Wednesday over sales tax funds
August 7, 2025 // According to the city's website, the measure's rise in sales tax from 8.5% to 9.25% should generate $10 million annually and help the city mend its $4 million budget deficit through the 2025/2026 fiscal year. Novato has cut city staffing by over 30 positions to manage a growing budget deficit, the city's site said, and one-time COVID-19 federal recovery funding that helped protect essential services has been depleted.
Hopkins postdoctoral researchers file to unionize with United Auto Workers
May 14, 2025 // While Hopkins-PRO provided opportunities for its members, it could not collectively bargain with the administration for improved conditions. By joining with UAW, a national union representing over 100,000 academic workers, postdocs hope to gain greater administrative leverage. Tonelli Cueto elaborated on the significance of this step in an email to The News-Letter.
UR graduate student workers hold informational picket ahead of strike
April 17, 2025 // If the university doesn’t agree to hold an election, union organizers would need to ask the National Labor Relations Board to organize one. Organizers say a Trump-era NLRB would be unlikely to grant an election agreement because, during President Trump’s first term, he sought to exclude student workers from unionizing. If Trump fills the three vacant positions on the five-member NLRB, it would have a conservative majority. The university says entering a private election agreement would be unprecedented for the campus. According to UR administration, all current unions on campus became official after asking the NLRB for an election, rather than asking the university directly.

CHICAGO: Mayor Brandon Johnson Asks CPS CEO Pedro Martinez To Resign. Martinez Says No, Sources Say
September 26, 2024 // ohnson’s desire to replace Martinez comes after he pushed school district leaders to take out a short-term loan to cover a pension payment for non-teaching staff and new costs related to the yet-to-be-settled Chicago Teachers Union contract. It also comes as school district leaders are in tense contract negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union. The mayor is also struggling to address looming deficits to the city budget he now oversees. Those deficits are driven, in part, by the CPS administration and school board’s refusal to take out the short-term loan.
NU graduate union sounding alarm on funding cuts for advanced student workers
August 5, 2024 // Kennedy said some advanced student workers are now left vulnerable because of the “really late” notification. In particular, she said advanced international students could face visa expiration and be forced to leave the country without funding, as they are required to demonstrate they can pay for all expenses in order to extend their visas past the standard five years. She said some are facing expirations within the next three weeks. One such advanced international student, who asked to remain anonymous because of their uncertain visa status, told the RoundTable that they were assured they’d receive Advanced Student Quarters funds for their next year of work but was asked to justify their funding request in mid-May, something that hadn’t been asked in years prior.

In Washington state, it’s illegal for public employees — including teachers — to go on strike. Judges have ruled against teacher strikes in the past but rarely impose any penalties.
