Smith College student dining workers vote for union
February 8, 2024 // Heyne noted that some 270 out of a total of approximately 400 student dining workers signed the union petition in November. But NLRB rules state that only those who work an average of four hours a week or more are eligible to vote. Student dining workers are capped at 10 hours a week. That reduced the voter list to 139, and that included some who had graduated or who are studying abroad this semester, Heyne said. Unionization momentum at Temple Health continues with workers at Fox Chase, Chestnut Hill Hospital
November 14, 2023 // The research staff at the Fox Chase Cancer Center filed union petitions with the National Labor Relations Board on Monday, becoming the fourth group to do so at the Northeast Philadelphia specialty hospital this year. The 91 workers run clinical trials at the National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. On the same day, about 200 registered nurses and 80 technical specialists at Chestnut Hill Hospital filed paperwork with the NLRB. Temple acquired the hospital less than a year ago. All three groups would be represented by the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, or PASNAP. Temple Health and Fox Chase declined to comment on the organizing efforts.

September 7, 2023 // According to the new union-friendly framework, if during the period between when workers file a unionization petition and hold an election, the board determines that the employees’ company engaged in unfair labor practices sufficient enough to have affected the vote, the NLRB can order the company to bargain with its workers, regardless of election results. A lawyer representing the Trader Joe’s United union, Seth Goldstein, told The Chief last week that he had filed more than a dozen unfair labor practices charges against the company with the NLRB since the workers first petitioned to unionize early this year.

Arizona university workers demand thriving wage
January 27, 2023 // Workers at the University of Arizona (UA) are demanding a large pay raise, to the tune of $25 an hour, by 2025. The United Campus Workers of Arizona (UCW), which also represents workers at Arizona State University (ASU), is calling for people to sign their petition to university administrators to implement a “dignified wage for ALL workers.” The UCW petition clamored for the payment of “a thriving wage, not a poverty wage” for workers due to rising inflation, which led to “significant increases in housing costs, gas, and food expenses.” The petition also claimed that around 4,000 employees “are not making enough to survive in our communities” because 43% of UA workers make less than $25 an hour. Currently, the UA petition has gathered 579 signatures out of its goal of 800 signatures.
The REI Union Effort Spreads To Another City
January 13, 2023 // REI workers in Northeast Ohio are aiming to make their store the third to unionize in less than a year, according to the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). The labor group said in a statement Wednesday that a “majority” of employees at the REI store in the Cleveland suburb of Orange Village had signed union cards and submitted a petition for a union election to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The board must ensure sufficient interest in unionizing before scheduling a vote.
