November 7, 2023 // Union members told FOX13 the company wants to take away 30-minute paid breaks, requiring workers to clock out during their break. Changes are also expected in overtime pay. According to BCTGM International Representative Darrell Copeland, the company proposed removing 8-hour overtime pay. New contract terms would only allow workers to get overtime after they’ve reached 40-hours.
Dunkin’ faces first union push in 12 years
September 5, 2023 // Recently, SEIU’s Union of Southern Service Workers has begun working toward a new model of unionism that relies on a combination of organizing across industries in specific cities, shop floor actions and regulatory pressure campaigns. The USSW’s strategy resulted in a strike at a South Carolina Waffle House earlier this summer, and a march on the boss at an Atlanta Dunkin’ earlier this month. Why BCTGM, which is not affiliated with SEIU, chose to pursue a union election at a 23-person Dunkin’ Donuts in Ohio is not clear. But it could signal that the upsurge in labor activity at the margins of the restaurant industry has not yet dissipated. BCTGM members struck Kellogg’s plants in 2021, and a Hormel plant in 2022.
Workers vote to strike at Ingredion in Cedar Rapids
August 3, 2022 // Picket lines started Monday morning outside the Ingredion plant on First Street SW. The BCTGM Local 100G rejected the latest contract offer Monday morning. Union representatives say they are negotiating pay and benefits, particularly for health coverage. BCTGM represents North America’s bakery, confectionery, tobacco, and grain milling industries - including everything from production workers to sanitation. It has 123 members at Ingredion. The union picketed the company during a 2015 labor dispute as the company was changing hands from Penford to Ingredion, but workers did not strike.
