Forest Lake bus drivers union files strike notice
April 24, 2023 // Bus drivers and aides declined a contract offer from the school district on Friday and authorized Teamsters Local 320 to file its strike with the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services. The union said its members rejected the offer due to many unfilled driver positions resulting in the combining or canceling of routes, excessive wait times for students and unpaid hours between routes.

Local 99 has described the strike as an unfair labor practice charge walkout in protest of alleged illegal actions by L.A. Unified during the negotiations process. Such strikes typically last for a fixed duration and can be staged without going through all the steps of bargaining that typically precede an open-ended strike, according to the unions. The union bargaining platform is extensive, covering a range of workplace and social-justice issues, including a commitment to extra resources for Black students and affordable housing for low-income families.

January 19, 2023 // Under Keolis’s latest offer, commuter bus drivers, dispatchers, and some technicians would earn $40 an hour at the top of the pay scale. That makes them competitive with other wages in the region such as the $43 for WMATA drivers or $40 at the DC Circulator. But local bus drivers and others would top out at $27.36, continuing the disparity that existed under the previously separate contracts.
South Jersey Bus Drivers Win Back Illegally-Seized Dues Money in First Amendment Lawsuit Against IFPTE Union Officials
October 27, 2022 // A settlement has now required IFPTE union officials to return to Foxworth and several other drivers all dues money taken from their paychecks unconstitutionally, plus interest. The settlement also bars the IFPTE union from demanding or seizing any dues from the drivers going forward. The drivers argued that IFPTE officials violated their First Amendment rights recognized in the 2018 Foundation-won Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court decision. In Janus, the Court declared it a First Amendment violation to force public sector workers to pay union dues or fees as a condition of employment. It also ruled that union officials can only deduct money from the paycheck of a public sector employee who has voluntarily waived his or her Janus rights.
Cherry Creek schools bus assistants closer to unionizing
August 15, 2022 // The bus assistants have said that they would like to join the bus driver’s union, and they say that their current classification by the district as paraprofessionals is not accurate. However, with the new policy the district has given them the option of forming their own separate union. Previously to this union drive, the district said that it did not have a policy on the books for certifying a new bargaining unit. The vote to approve the policy was initially on the consent agenda but was separated out into its own vote so that board members could discuss it.
