June 4, 2025 // The ULP strike is protesting against what UFCW Local 7 says are unfair practices, such as refusing to offer retroactive wage increases and benefit contributions, bypassing the union to deal directly with a worker regarding grievances, and covering up an illegal no-poaching agreement with Kroger during the 2022 King Soopers strike.

The employees, standing under the umbrella of Teamsters Local 630, are on strike, with picket lines slated for Thursday, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. According to the union's narrative, the company, owned by Chedraui USA, is closing existing unionized warehouses and directing employees to reapply at a new site in Rancho Cucamonga, where wages are calculated to be $10 to $12 lower per hour. Teamsters Local 630 Secretary-Treasurer Lou Villalvazo condemned the alleged activities, noting, "The company is continuing to commit unfair labor practices without any regard for its workers." He added, "With the busy summer months approaching, the company faces not just a moral but a logistical crisis," as quoted by The Orange County Register.

Oregon and Washington fruit packers vote to unionize fails

November 19, 2023 // Gibson told the Capital Chronicle the vote affirmed that most Mount Adams fruitpackers do not want a union, but that it also revealed a need to improve communication with staff. “It’s an opportunity to reset, and for managers and employees to work better together. The ones who wanted to unionize – we respect their interests and want to listen to their needs,” he said. Barajas said Gibson and company leaders had reached out to her and other employees to schedule a meeting, though a date has not been set. She does not know if the meeting is punitive or if it is to discuss issues the union organizers brought up, she said.

    Oregon sees record-high unionization

October 9, 2023 // what’s happening here in Oregon is a little different: it’s driven by independent unions. Rather than join AFL-CIO, SEIU or other big unions, some Oregon workers are taking a “grow your own” approach to unionizing. Local chain Burgerville’s independent union, Burgerville Workers Union, won federal recognition in 2018 and signed its first contract in 2021. Seeing Burgerville’s success in organizing without the resources of a bigger union inspired workers at Voodoo Doughnut.

Dunkin’ faces first union push in 12 years

September 5, 2023 // Recently, SEIU’s Union of Southern Service Workers has begun working toward a new model of unionism that relies on a combination of organizing across industries in specific cities, shop floor actions and regulatory pressure campaigns. The USSW’s strategy resulted in a strike at a South Carolina Waffle House earlier this summer, and a march on the boss at an Atlanta Dunkin’ earlier this month. Why BCTGM, which is not affiliated with SEIU, chose to pursue a union election at a 23-person Dunkin’ Donuts in Ohio is not clear. But it could signal that the upsurge in labor activity at the margins of the restaurant industry has not yet dissipated. BCTGM members struck Kellogg’s plants in 2021, and a Hormel plant in 2022.

June 2, 2022 // The separate announcements and filings were deliberate: Employees of the independent New Seasons Labor Union decided to represent themselves without an established union partner. “We decided that the best way for us to be heard was for us to represent ourselves,” a New Seasons Labor Union organizer told the Mercury.
