In a speech on Wednesday, Weingarten said that students are “drowning in tech” and there needs to be research done on the effects of students’ learning with AI.

US HHS reverses job cuts at safety research agency
January 14, 2026 // The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reversing staffing cuts to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, reinstating employees at the agency that provides research and services for coal miners, firefighters and others, according to an agency spokesperson. The status of NIOSH workers had been in flux since mass job cuts last year, with some workers brought out of administrative leave earlier this month only to be notified days later that they were permanently terminated.

The Congressional procedure means lawmakers can force a vote on a piece of legislation against the wishes of the leadership on the condition that it has majority support in the House.
Trump’s mass probationary firings were illegal, judge concludes, but he won’t order re-hirings
September 17, 2025 // Normally, Alsup said, his findings would require the Trump administration to return all probationers to their jobs. He noted the Supreme Court has specifically rejected such relief, however, and “too much water has now passed under the bridge.” Some employees have found new jobs, while some agencies have engaged in reorganizations that have eliminated the roles altogether. “The terminated probationary employees have moved on with their lives and found new jobs,” Alsup said. “Many would no longer be willing or able to return to their posts.” Instead, the judge once again ordered agencies to, by Nov. 14, send letters to all fired probationary employees that state “you were not terminated on the basis of your personal performance.”
CDC finalizes roughly 600 layoffs; union says workforce ‘decimated’
August 26, 2025 // “I can confirm that roughly 600 CDC employees were let go,” an American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill. “The cuts are across the agency including the Division of Violence Prevention, EEO, FOIA, the Office of Financial Resources, the offices of the chief information and chief operating officers, and more.” The AFGE blasted the timing of the firings, taking place so soon after the fatal shooting that occurred at the CDC’s offices in Atlanta.

Exclusive-US cancels FDA bargaining session over layoffs, union says
May 7, 2025 // Senior U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman on April 25 issued an injunction to block the executive order from being implemented, pending the outcome of a lawsuit by the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), which represents about 160,000 federal employees including as many as 9,000 FDA staff. The Trump administration has appealed that injunction. A five-hour, virtual meeting between the union and the Department of Health and Human Services to discuss mass layoffs at the FDA was axed the evening before it was set to take place. No reason was given for the cancellation and no attempt was made to reschedule it, according to NTEU chapter president Anthony Lee.

They amended their lawsuit against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management over the weekend to add a claim involving the OPM email directing workers to justify their workweek.
