Trump courts union vote as Teamsters hold off from backing Harris

August 19, 2024 // But an internal poll conducted before Biden withdrew found that its members were closely split, with 37 per cent supporting Trump, compared to roughly 45 per cent for the current president, according to a person familiar with the polling. One forklift driver in Michigan, who asked that his name be withheld because he feared retaliation for speaking without authorisation, said that he and other Trump-supporting Teamsters believed the former president would help all workers by strengthening the economy and the job market.

OPINION STAR PARKER: Unions and Republicans

August 16, 2024 // According to a recent survey from Pew Research, 39 percent of union members are Republicans. Furthermore, when we examine the polling data, we see a disconnect between what voters think about unions and what workers are actually doing. Regarding the latter, the data is clear that fewer and fewer workers are joining unions.

Texas sees surge in union membership, defying state’s anti-union history

August 14, 2024 // In total, there are about 586,000 union workers in Texas, a fraction of the millions who work here. And yet, the increase is somewhat remarkable given the state's long history of hostility toward unions. And nationwide, union membership dipped during the same time. Texas is one of 26 so-called right-to-work states. Texas lawmakers first passed that law in 1993. The law allows for workers the option to not pay unions due and the right to work in a unionized workplace without being a part of the union itself. And more recently, the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a law aimed at stopping local governments from enacting progressive-leaning worker protections and other policies.

Matt Kane: Better For America Ep 298 | Vinnie Vernuccio (Podcast)

August 6, 2024 // In mid July, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. It was the first time that a leader of the union ever addressed the GOP convention. However, the Teamsters have also requested a speaking slot at the DNC later this month, meaning a lot is still up in the air regarding their support. Vinnie Vernuccio, the president and co-founder of the Institute for the American Worker joined Matt Kane on the Better For America podcast to share what he makes of this notworthy development. Vernuccio says that while O’Brien’s presence was significant, he feels his messaging “whiffed,” as his remarks could have been mistaken for ones targeted at a DEMOCRAT convention. Vernuccio also wonders whether the Teamsters are truly considering a Republican endorsement, or if they are simply hedging their bets due to their expectation that President Trump will win the November election.

Republicans Should Beware the Big Labor Snake

July 31, 2024 // If presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris wins in November, organized labor will tighten its grip on American workers. In 2020, Ms. Harris ran on banning right-to-work provisions, codifying “card check” union election theft and sectoral bargaining. If Ms. Harris imposes her radical agenda, organized labor will likely expand its tentacles into new frontiers, such as pharmacists and ride-hailing companies. Republicans should understand that the best way to win over union workers is by doubling down on Mr. Trump’s worker freedom agenda. Tax cuts and deregulation spur economic growth and job creation, a rising tide that lifts all boats. Right-to-work laws ensure that American workers are not forced to pay dues to a union boss to put food on the table. Strong protections for independent contracting allow Americans to make a living by being their own boss.

Trump and Vance shouldn’t give in to European-style labor regulation

July 30, 2024 // Economists have proposed a variety of unique ideas to protect workers, ranging from the earned-income tax credit to pursuing some variation of a negative income tax policy. American unions could also be transformed by eliminating their government-granted exclusive-negotiator status so that multiple unions could represent workers for any given employer. Doing so would increase union membership and give workers a more diverse set of institutions and protections or benefits to seek in the workplace. Donald Trump and J.D. Vance are correct that conservatives should pursue a pro-worker agenda. But it must lean into what has traditionally made the U.S. labor market vibrant—entrepreneurial dynamism, not rigid European-style labor policy.

WMKT Special Edition Interviews Vinnie Vernuccio: RNC Labor Speech

July 30, 2024 // Vinnie Vernuccio, President and Co-founder of the Institute for the American Worker joins the show to discuss the fallout from Teamsters Union President Sean O'Brien's speech at the RNC convention.

LTE: The Teamsters Boss Paid a Price for His GOP Speech

July 30, 2024 // Wall Street Journal Letter to the Editor by Vinnie Vernuccio: Sean O’Brien’s speech to the Republican National Convention wasn’t the end of the story.

Hard labor No, American conservatism shouldn’t move leftward on unions

July 30, 2024 // “The Teamsters recently stated the ‘S’ in ESG is ‘a critically important tool for advancing worker interests in the 21st century,’” he wrote. “Similarly, the AFL-CIO has said ESG investing ‘advance[s] the causes of working people.’” The “end game is to give unions more power,” Vernuccio concluded. “Yet while unions win, workers lose — and so do the investors whose money is being used for political purposes.”

Op-Ed: Big Labor’s GOP Gamble Serves Unions, Not Workers

July 29, 2024 // Rather than reevaluate union practices driving workers away, the same day that Sean delivered his speech at the RNC, the Teamsters hired three high-priced law firms to sue my organization, the Freedom Foundation, for the high crime of contacting his members with an invitation to leave their union.
