Clark University undergrad workers on strike: Here are the latest developments
March 19, 2025 // A strike fund for the Clark student workers has been set up to pay students who are losing income while striking. There is a separate fund, organized by the Teamsters, which students can also access. According to The Scarlet, students must participate for a minimum of 15 hours of picketing and other strike-related activities in order to claim money from the Teamsters fund. Undergraduate students who work at Clark University are seeking unionization, with employees citing a desire for higher salaries and guaranteed working hours. The students have partnered with Teamsters Local 170, that has been negotiating on their behalf with the university.

February 13, 2025 // The “protesters” that did appear were likely Teamsters who worked for employers other than Amazon. These bogus holiday season announcements are a long-standing trick by unions. They bank on news outlets being short-staffed and on the lookout for quick, easy stories. Unions attempting, for example, to organize Walmart for several years running in the 00s would announce that major walkouts were planned for the post-Thanksgiving “black Friday” sales. On the actual day, reporters who bothered to follow up would be pointed to protests at a few select locations that had few, if any, actual Walmart employees.

December 4, 2024 // When it comes to getting employers to cave to demands, the success of one-day strikes is mixed — especially for those low-wage, low-leverage workers. Short work stoppages failed to unionize Walmart in the 2010s, along with those fast food workers from Fight for 15. Starbucks and its unionized employees are still negotiating a first contract. Long strikes are still happening — just ask SAG-AFTRA — and probably won’t be phased out entirely because they still carry much more leverage. Instead, one-day strikes often have a different goal in mind that’s still essential for a union victory — getting workers excited.
