Starbucks and Workers United, long at odds, say they’ll restart labor talks
February 28, 2024 // Workers have voted to unionize at more than 370 company-owned Starbucks stores in the U.S., but none of those stores has reached a labor agreement with the company. The process has been contentious. In multiple cases, federal courts have ordered Starbucks to reinstate workers who were fired after leading unionization efforts at their stores. Regional offices of the National Labor Relations Board also have issued at least 120 complaints against Starbucks for unfair labor practices, including refusal to bargain and reserving pay raises and other benefits for non-union workers.
TruStage union members ratify new agreement, citing gains on wages, benefits
December 18, 2023 // During negotiations, union members and leaders said that TruStage, formerly CUNA Mutual, had over the years converted many jobs once represented by the union to nonunion and contract positions. The company provides insurance services and financial and investment products that credit unions offer their members. In addition to the two-week strike, the union conducted a broad campaign enlisting support from the public and other unions in Madison. TruStage workers were among the participants in a November labor solidarity rally at the state Capitol.

Appeals panel: Chicago must force telecom companies to hire union labor to upgrade their equipment on city-owned poles
January 6, 2023 // A state appeals panel has ruled a labor union can force the city of Chicago to require telecommunications companies to hire union workers to install 5G antennas on city-owned utility poles. After Chicago officials allowed nonunion contractors to install modern cellular service antennas on light and traffic poles, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 9 filed a grievance alleging a violation of its multiproject labor agreement with the city. An arbitrator ruled in favor of the union. But after the city challenged that ruling, Cook County Circuit Judge Anna Loftus vacated the award in June 2021.

He said although an agreement has been reached with the company, the union is planning to pursue Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges with the National Labor Relations Board against the employer. December 18, 2021 // The union representing thousands of Oregon grocery workers reached a tentative labor agreement with management Friday night, ending a strike that was scheduled to run through Christmas Eve. The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, representing many employees at Fred Meyer and Quality Food Centers stores, says the new agreement provides significant wage increases and workplace protections, new retirement and healthcare benefits.
