Democratic Sens. Michael Bennet of Colorado, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Ruben Gallego of Arizona, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, John Hickenlooper of Colorado, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Jon Ossoff of Georgia, Gary Peters of Michigan, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, Adam Schiff of California, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Mark Warner of Virginia, Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island voted in favor of Chavez-DeRemer’s nomination. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was the only Republican opposed to Trump’s labor pick.
The Changes Begin: Trump Administration Takes Slew of Actions in the Labor and Employment Field
January 28, 2025 // President Trump did not take immediate action to fire the General Counsels for the EEOC and NLRB, moves that had been widely anticipated for his first day in office, although those actions are expected soon. Once made, the moves will further shift those agencies away from their Biden-era policies toward, to some extent, more business-friendly approaches with some significant caveats evident in the President’s initial Executive Orders.
OASAM staffer to serve as acting Labor secretary
January 20, 2025 // Career staffer Vince Micone will helm the Labor Department temporarily at the outset of the Trump administration as it awaits the confirmation of Lori Chavez-DeRemer. Micone was serving as deputy assistant secretary for operations in DOL’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management, which primarily handles the back-end needs of the agency such as IT support.
Op-ed: Biden’s Last Labor Stand: Honoring the First Female Secretary of Labor While Propping Up His Failed One
December 17, 2024 // Biden even attempted to appoint a radical progressive incompetent to the post of United States Secretary of Labor and as much as bragged about this in this speech. What Biden failed to note is that Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su was never confirmed by the Senate, because she is that incompetent. Yet, Su was there anyway, praised and introduced by the first female president of the AFL-CIO, Liz Shuler, who credited Su with turning "the Department of Labor into a true House of Labor." A house of labor that has tacitly excluded and targeted the more than 64 million independent professionals and small businesses; but, apples and oranges.
National Labor Relations Board Expected to Have Republican Majority Shortly After Trump Takes Office
December 16, 2024 // It is likely that upon the Republicans becoming the majority, the NLRB will begin reversing various pro-union decisions the Biden NLRB handed down during the last four years, especially in those decisions in which the Republican members issued lengthy and robust dissents. It is not clear at this time whom President-elect Trump will appoint or what cases the new NLRB will focus on in the short term, but a flurry of action is expected, nonetheless.
Report Rips Biden–Harris Labor Secretary Julie Su
September 23, 2024 // One individual used the name “Mr. Poopy Pants” on his official application and “received an approved claim.” Rapper Nuke Bizzle filed “92 fraudulent applications” and posted a video about the ease of ripping off California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) that gets a lot of attention in the “Widespread Fraud” report. “EDD, under leadership of Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA) secretary Julie Su, made the decision early in the pandemic to ‘pay and chase’ after she was informed that keeping integrity checks in place would lead to a backlog in processing claims largely due to EDDs outdated IT,” the report says
Commentary: Julie Su again headed toward DOL confirmation, trucking still opposed
February 28, 2024 // "No matter how many times she’s renominated, Julie Su’s record remains a huge red flag for our industry and any senator concerned about radical policies from California becoming federal law," said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. "The independent contractor rule she just finalized as acting secretary undermines the livelihoods of 350,000 professional truck drivers across our country who choose to run their own small businesses, and she needs to answer for it."
Senate left without voting to confirm Julie Su as labor secretary. She’ll stay on the job though.
December 26, 2023 // “We are going to be very clear — Julie Su will be renominated (as) Secretary of Labor in the new year. That is something that we are committed to,” said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. Sen. Bill Cassidy, top Republican on the committee that would first have to approve the nomination, remained opposed to Su as secretary. Democrats have a committee majority, and control 51 Senate votes, but have been unable to get enough votes to formally confirm Su. Cassidy, R-La., said in a statement last week that “We need a qualified Secretary of Labor who can impartially enforce the law, properly manage a department, and refrain from partisan activism. Ms. Su failed to show her ability to do any of those three thing “It is clear Ms. Su lacks the necessary votes for confirmation. I urge President Biden to put forward a nominee who is committed to fair enforcement of our nation’s labor laws and is capable of being confirmed in the Senate.”
Biden Bypasses Senate Confirmation in Labor’s Julie Su
October 3, 2023 // According to the GAO, she can stay in the top Labor Department post without Senate confirmation. That effectively cuts out the voters and sets a poor precedent. Now, should some federal secretary depart, the president need only appoint an “acting” replacement. According to the Government Accountability Office, that person can avoid Senate confirmation and remain on the job, regardless of their suitability for the post.
BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IGNORES PROTOCOL – INSTALLS UNCONFIRMED ACTING LABOR SECRETARY JULIE SU TO PRESIDENTIAL LINE OF SUCCESSION
September 25, 2023 // “Beyond keeping Su as Acting Secretary, she’s been added to the official Cabinet webpage in the presidential line of succession — ahead of sitting Cabinet members who actually received a vote of confirmation.” Withe concluded, “President Biden champions himself the most pro-union president in our nation’s history — but what he really means is that he’s been bought and paid for by Big Labor bosses for his entire career, and now those labor leaders are calling in their favors.”
