    Labor Watch: St. John’s Sues New York, Suit Against Rutgers Unions Dismissed

    July 6, 2026 // The bargaining rights of faculty at religious colleges have fluctuated in recent years. The Trump-appointed National Labor Relations Board decided in 2020 that religious institutions are exempt from its jurisdiction, reversing an Obama-era precedent that determined employees who do not perform religious work at religious institutions, like faculty members, can unionize. However, religious institutions have always been able to voluntarily recognize and bargain with faculty unions, as St. John’s did in 1970 when both its American Association of University Professors chapter and Faculty Association union were formed.

Walker charged Teamsters Local 592 union officials with retaliating against employees who previously filed Unfair Labor Charges against the union. Walker is receiving free legal aid from National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation staff attorneys.

A group of 46 employees across Austin signed a petition asking for sick and hazard pay, alongside improved COVID-19 safety procedures. Employees later filed for union election through the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Aug. 2022.

UAW President Shawn Fain said that nearly a year ago, thousands of Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga voted to join the UAW to "win the respect and dignified life that union autoworkers at the Big Three have enjoyed for generations." "Since then, the company has failed to meet the basic standard at the bargaining table that 150,000 American autoworkers have won at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis," he said in the statement.

    February 27, 2025 // The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents patient care, service and skilled craft workers, called for its second strike against the UC this academic year for Wednesday and Thursday. University Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America 9119, which represents researchers and technical workers, will also strike from Wednesday to Friday. UCLA Housing said in a Monday email that it will consolidate dining locations and adjust menus in response to AFSCME 3299’s strike. Bathroom cleaning schedules will also be modified, and some carriers may not deliver mail to UCLA, housing staff added in the email.
