September 26, 2024 // The unionizing campaign began in July when 55 of the 80 potentially eligible workers signed union cards, Deming said. Since a petition to unionize was filed with the state’s labor board, SEIU alleges the city elections board has tied up the effort in court. Deming said the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners has filed six objections to the petition to organize. One objection is that unionizing would break an employee prohibition of political activity, which Deming said is not the case. SEIU does endorse political candidates, but no union dues are used to fund political activity, Deming said. SEIU 73 already represents employees of the Cook County Electoral Board, Deming said.

If the company expands production as planned, Eos will be eligible for $1.98 billion in Section 45X tax credits between 2026 and 2032. Legislators framed the Inflation Reduction Act as a source of “good-paying union jobs” within the renewable energy sector. But the legislation did not require companies receiving federal funds to commit to union neutrality agreements.

The United Auto Workers today operates under the watch of a court-appointed monitor, who is currently investigating president Shawn Fain for financial misconduct and workplace retaliation. This summer, the IBEW Philadelphia local had its longtime president and business manager each sentenced to federal prison for bribery and embezzlement. This isn’t a case of a few bad apples ruining the bunch. Corruption is systemic to American unionism, and it has been for over 100 years. For a long time, these bullies had disproportionate economic and political power, and that rubbed many Americans the wrong way.

July 26, 2024 // Amazon delivery drivers from Illinois, who have been striking since the end of June, were also there. "I've been working at Amazon for a year now. The only reason why I stayed past the first few months is because I learned of this unionization," said Amazon driver Ebony Echevarria. Amazon said it already offers competitive pay, health benefits from day one, and career growth. The company also said full-time employees at the Air Hub have a starting wage of $21 up to $23 and a 401k. The union wants its workers to be paid $30 an hour.

The industry has also objected to what they say is confusion in how the new law works; the labor board this month was still scheduling hearings on formal regulations to implement the law. Four of the five employers have objected to the new unions, which prompts the board to investigate and hold administrative hearings.
