Grindr employees look to unionize
July 24, 2023 // Employees at the LGBTQ dating app are mounting the labor effort together as Grindr United and working with the Communications Workers of America, one of the United States’ largest unions dedicated to helping those in the news media, the airlines, broadcast and cable television, public service, higher education, health care, manufacturing, high tech, and more. Workers say the nationwide attacks prompted them to focus on fighting for numerous changes to their work experience such as gift-matching, pay increases to keep up with the economy, a professional development budget, and severance protocols.
Workers at The Trevor Project Unionize
July 13, 2023 // The Trevor Project has grown exponentially over the past few years, leading to what one union organizer describes as difficult workloads for crisis counselors dealing with increasing numbers of distress calls. Amy Solar-Greco, an organizer with Communications Workers of America — the union representing Friends of Trevor United — says Trevor’s rapid growth was “unsustainable and burdensome” for employees who are tasked with “performing intense, highly stressful and lifesaving work.” The unionized workers include crisis counselors, policy advocates and curriculum developers, among others. Several of them interviewed for this article say that unionizing will not only help them support each other in the workplace but also better support the LGBTQ youth they serve.
Sega of America workers overwhelmingly vote to unionize
July 11, 2023 // Sega declined to voluntarily recognize the union. Management decided to "instead engage with known union-busters in an attempt to spread misinformation, fear and division," Winry Ramsey, a QA tester and AEGIS-CWA member previously said. The parties have five business days to submit any objections they have to the election. Otherwise, the NLRB will certify the results. Sega will then have to bargain with AEGIS-CWA in good faith to agree on a union contract. "We are overjoyed to celebrate our union election win as members of AEGIS-CWA. From the start of this campaign, it has been clear that we all care deeply about our work at Sega," Sega translator and AEGIS-CWA member Ángel Gómez said in a statement. "Now, through our union, we’ll be able to protect the parts of our jobs we love, and strengthen the benefits, pay, and job stability available to all workers.

Meow Wolf workers in Denver unionize, get contract
June 22, 2023 // The Meow Wolf union is an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America. Denver Meow Wolf employees formally issued an intent to unionize in July 2022 and 70% of employees voted approval to join the union. Two bargaining units were formed for operations and security staff, union member Michael Wilson told The New Mexican. The four-year contract provides increases in wages, more paid time off, layoff protections, union participation in hiring, clear and consistent scheduling, a better-regimented employee review process and institutes progressive discipline and grievance procedures, Wilson said. Meow Wolf employees in Santa Fe unionized in 2020 with a contract ratified in April 2022, but the agreement didn't include Meow Wolf employees in Denver and Las Vegas, Nev.

Google contractors vote to unionize in historic landslide election
April 27, 2023 // The unionization vote passed 41-0. The National Labor Relations Board representative counting the ballots said 49 workers were eligible to vote. The employees work for the subcontractor Cognizant on content operations for Google’s YouTube Music, resolving bugs and completing other tasks to ensure the streaming service runs smoothly. Google continues to argue that Cognizant is the workers’ sole employer and says the Mountain View-based tech giant should not be forced to negotiate with the workers. Held via mail-in ballot, the election creates a bargaining unit with the Alphabet Workers Union — an organization affiliated with the Communications Workers of America that, until now, has represented only one office of unionized Google workers, a contracted Fiber retail shop in Missouri. Those workers opted to drop Google from their petition.

Khanna told the employees on Friday that he has corresponded with new Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan and expects to meet with him after he takes over April 1. “I’m hopeful that between the approach to him and the approach to some of the board members, who I know, that they may see the light — allowing for reasonable unionization and reasonable terms,” Khanna said. He mentioned that Microsoft Corp. MSFT, -2.29% last year came to a neutrality agreement with the Communications Workers of America; Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is a Starbucks board member.
Why Workers at Growing Number of Nonprofits Are Unionizing
February 2, 2023 // Nonprofit employees may be more predisposed to unionizing than other workers. They tend to be younger, well educated, and altruistic — a perfect blend of characteristics that tip people toward interest in unions, says David Zonderman, a history professor at North Carolina State University who teaches labor and nonprofit history. Nonprofits come out of a tradition of charity and sacrifice, and most pay their employees less than private companies and government. As a result, many unionizing workers are looking for livable wages and opportunities to advance, all the more important as housing costs and inflation have shot up. Others see unions as a way to press for greater racial equity.
