    Opinion: Teachers Unions Get Desperate

    February 17, 2026 // Antichoice plaintiffs “usually file lawsuits right before families sign up for the program just to be particularly cruel. They know they’ll lose nearly every case, but delaying or enjoining the programs in any way is the last-ditch effort to slow maximum uptake for families,” says Tommy Schultz, CEO of the American Federation for Children. Many suits are striking out. Idaho’s high court just ruled 5-0 in favor of the state choice program. Top courts in Arizona, Florida, North Carolina and West Virginia have upheld choice programs. The U.S. Supreme Court has continued to issue beneficial rulings. Yet the legal threat is real, and unions, often accompanied by local school districts, continue to throw millions at litigation and disruption, forcing states to spend huge amounts to defend against them. Then the unions and the districts claim schools are underfunded.

    Columbus Dispatch, Newark Advocate journalists vote to unionize

    February 10, 2026 // “For too long, Ohio’s greatest home newspaper has hemorrhaged great journalists due to short-sighted cuts by our corporate owner,” Dispatch news reporter Jordan Laird said in a statement. “Now, we’re taking some power back.” The Dispatch has undergone serious staff cuts in the six years following a merger between GateHouse Media and Gannett. In 2019, the paper had more than 90 people across all departments. Dispatch journalists said there are now less than 40 non-management employees in the newsroom.

    Employees of popular Columbus ice cream brand vote to unionize

    January 22, 2026 // Workers at all eight Columbus area scoop shops voted by nearly a 2-to-1 margin to join United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1059. Out of the 80 employees, 18 votes were counted as for and 10 votes were counted as against. Unionization efforts in the food and retail industries have increasingly focused on wages, scheduling stability and workplace conditions. Advocates say it gives them a more formal seat at the table.

    Commentary: Right-to-Work States Dominate U-Haul Growth Index

    January 12, 2026 // Among the top ten growth states in the U-Haul index, nine have a Right-to-Work law that protects workers from being forced to pay dues to union bosses as a condition of employment. -Among the bottom ten states in the U-Haul index, NONE has a Right-to-Work law. All are forced unionism states. -Of the 25 top ranked cities in the U-Haul Growth Index, 24 are located in Right-to-Work states. The 10 best ranked states in the U-Haul Growth Index are Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Washington, Arizona, Idaho, Alabama and Georgia. All are Right-to-Work except Washington.

    OHIO: Springfield Local Schools suspends transportation services, breakfast program

    January 7, 2026 // With support staff expected to go on strike starting Jan. 7, the district announced that all transportation services will be suspended for Jan. 7. The breakfast program will also be suspended starting Jan. 7.

    Freight rail engineers vote in favor of new contract

    January 5, 2026 // According to the BLET, 70 percent of its more than 12,000 members voted approved the five-year agreement. The union says the contract addresses rates of pay and other issues and that there were no concessions or work rule changes in the new agreement. The contract covers BLET employees with major freight railroads, including Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, Norfolk Southern Railway Co. (NS) and Canadian National.

    Ross Township teachers’ union approves 10-day strike

    December 11, 2025 // Ross Local School District’s teachers’ union has approved a 10-day strike and secured a lease for their strike headquarters. This does not mean that the teachers are on strike yet, but representatives said on Monday that they’re prepared to walk out if contract negotiations don’t reach a conclusion.
