Unions’ political spending ignores almost 40% of their own members
November 4, 2024 // How can a union that purports to represent all of its members give so freely to only one political party? The answer: It can’t. At least, not while accurately representing its diverse membership. At best, public union executives are misrepresenting their members and are mismanaging their finances. At worst, they are engaging in coercion of dues and political corruption. Neither is a good look for the executives who claim to be helping everyday workers.

The next president may face a ‘January Surprise’: Port strikes
October 31, 2024 // Pay isn’t the issue. There’s a whopping 62 percent pay increase for the ILA already on the table. The issue is that the union wants no further automation of the ports. That’s not reasonable. US ports are already far behind the international standard for automation. CEI has proposed a way to avoid these potential crises in the future: put the ports under the authority of the Railway Labor Act (RLA), as opposed to the National Labor Relations Act’s (NLRA), the law that currently covers them. The RLA gives the president and Congress the power to step in and force a contract. That type of intervention isn’t ideal, but the threat of it will likely force both the union and management to reach a deal quicker. Congress would have to amend the RLA to make that happen and it isn’t likely to get around to it in time to prevent another walkout by the ILA before January.
Brainerd School District allows union to stuff mailboxes with campaign lit
October 31, 2024 // Education Minnesota’s local chapter in Brainerd stuffed campaign flyers into staff mailboxes at the district urging staff to check out their “Pro-Educator” voter guide. While not necessarily illegal, it is a clear misuse of public resources for political gain. Most school districts have a specific policy against using staff mailboxes for campaigning, but Brainerd does not. Yet.
U.S. Has Certified Unions for 50,000 Student Employees
October 31, 2024 // National Labor Relations Board has approved dozens of bargaining units for housing and dining workers, in addition to teaching assistants. The NLRB released data Monday that underscored one way that could manifest itself. The federal agency said that it has certified 54 bargaining units for more than 50,000 student employees since 2022, in the wake of its 2021 withdrawal of a rule proposed by the Trump administration that would have made it much harder for graduate students on private college campuses to form unions.

October 31, 2024 // The American Federation of Teachers has sent hundreds of its members from New York to Pennsylvania and from Illinois to Wisconsin to canvass “labor doors.” The United Auto Workers has similarly deployed union members to fellow members’ homes and work sites, in addition to an aggressive phone, text and mail campaign.

October 31, 2024 // Teachers in swing states such as Pennsylvania should be particularly aware of where unions are spending their dues. During the 2022-2023 fiscal year, the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), representing over 175,000 Pennsylvania teachers, spent $5.02 million on politics. This spending went primarily to progressive causes. PSEA is also an affiliate of the NEA, which means a portion of Pennsylvania teachers dues are also spent on politics by the national union.

October 27, 2024 // With the November 5th elections right around the corner, throughout the months of September and October, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) has been busy approving and announcing the doling out of hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to failing union pension plans. While the plan bailouts are not as large as some of the bailouts provided over the last two years, in total, they are a substantial sum—nearly $900 million.

October 25, 2024 // The first requires locals to give 60 days’ notice of plans to disaffiliate, allowing the NEA to gear up a defense. Locals must also give NEA officials time to speak at a membership meeting. A two-thirds majority is now required to leave the national union, not the simple majority required to affiliate in the first place. The second restriction allows the NEA itself – not only state affiliates – to establish trusteeships over local unions. Trusteeship permits the NEA to invalidate any attempt to disaffiliate and to conduct what amounts to a hostile takeover, directing the local’s books, funds, actions, and officers.
