Self-Described ‘Most Pro-Union President’ Joe Biden Facing Skepticism From Labor Leaders Following Debate Debacle

July 16, 2024 // A day earlier, Fain met with his union’s executive board to discuss grave concerns about Biden’s ability to win the looming presidential election, according to three sources who spoke with Reuters. The UAW has roughly 400,000 members with an outsized presence in Michigan, a key swing state. Association of Flight Attendants President Sara Nelson reportedly was among the most outspoken regarding concerns about Biden’s electability at Wednesday’s AFL-CIO meeting,

Delta Air Lines, facing another attempt to unionize flight attendants, raises pay

April 24, 2024 // Nelson believes that unions are in a stronger place now, even in the largely nonunion South, where the United Auto Workers won an election last week at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee. Nelson’s union is seeking an industry-leading contract at United Airlines, which could bolster its case at Delta.

American Airlines Flight Attendants Voted On New Union Officers, And Nobody Won

January 29, 2024 // The problem is that, in the meantime, APFA is asking the National Mediation Board to be allowed to strike. Their next negotiation session is February 5th, and they have a status conference on March 13th. Whether the current slate of officers is re-elected or not, there should be negotiations after the election when there’s less immediate pressure to ‘show strength’ and ‘make promises’ and where compromise might be possible.

Breeze Flight Attendants Take Next Step in Unionizing

January 24, 2024 // The move comes nearly two weeks after Breeze flight attendants announced their organizing campaign. Some of the reasons why Breeze flight attendants said they wanted to unionize included issues with pay, a lack of hotel accommodations when away from bases, a changing set of workplace rules, and “disrespectful treatment from management.” “Breeze Flight Attendants are proud of their work as aviation’s first responders and they are ready to lock in a real voice at their growing airline,” AFA International President Sara Nelson said in a statement. “Flight Attendants are not wasting any time organizing for legal rights on the job and a secure future at Breeze with a union contract. We’re with them all the way.”

Thousands of Delta Airlines employees hoping to unionize

November 15, 2023 // Delta employees said flight attendants, baggage handlers, mechanics, and ramp workers should have the right to unionize. On Tuesday Delta Airlines ramp worker Gameli Appiah, and dozens of others claimed the corporate giant is interfering with their right.

‘Workers are done,’ AFA union head on potential nationwide strikes.

July 17, 2023 // This summer, several labor unions across multiple industries are turning up the heat on major corporations. If you combine the actors, writers and potentially auto workers, 321,000 Americans could be picketing this summer. Association of Flight Attendants President Sara Nelson joins Ali Velshi to explain why workers are fed up with current conditions.

Cummings wins runoff, will be Communications Workers first African-American president

July 12, 2023 // Cummings is the union vice president who leads CWA’s District 6, headquartered in Austin, Texas, and was the longtime president of Houston-based Local 6222. He defeated Ed Mooney, the union vice president and leader of mid-Atlantic District 2-13. Cummings succeeds current President Chris Shelton, who is retiring at the end of this convention, on July 13, in St. Louis. Mooney suffered from credible accusations, disclosed by an outside investigating panel after complaints from nine former and present local leaders of sexual harassment, dislike of gays, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation against foes within the union.

As Boston’s own Sean O’Brien matches UPS at the bargaining table, Amazon could be next

June 26, 2023 // But O’Brien said he’d support pulling the trigger — putting the International’s $300 million-plus “strike defense fund” to use — if he doesn’t see adequate financial gains for his membership. For him, this battle over the largest private-sector union contract in the United States isn’t only about righting the wrongs baked into the union’s current agreement with UPS. It’s meant to show how organized labor can flex its muscle against giant companies. And it’s a prelude for a long-awaited showdown with decidedly anti-union Amazon, where the Teamsters hope to organize the online retail giant’s massive logistics workforce. “All eyes are upon what the Teamsters do in these negotiations,” O’Brien said in an interview. “It’s going to be the defining moment in the labor movement. It’s going to be a template on how we take on Corporate America, how we take on big business.” Dissatisfaction with the current UPS contract, signed in 2018, helped O’Brien win his race to lead the Teamsters two years ago. Then the head of the Teamsters Local 25 in Charlestown, O’Brien broke away from the previous International leadership, led by James Hoffa, because of disagreements over the last round of UPS negotiations.

Smart: SkyWest Will Pay Flight Attendants During Boarding

May 2, 2023 // Now we’re seeing the two airlines without flight attendant unions be the first to introduce boarding pay, while all the airlines with unionized flight attendants haven’t been able to do this yet. Admittedly I’m sure boarding pay will come for unionized flight attendants, but it will come as part of a larger contract negotiation, and presumably there will be an opportunity cost to it. Delta and SkyWest management are playing a smart game here, and are putting those trying to push for unionization at Delta and SkyWest in a tough position.
