The store at 4500 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland, had been the third location of the upscale grocer to join New Seasons Labor Union (NSLU) when workers unionized in December 2022.

Bernie Sanders sidestepped the issue of worker benefits to address his party’s real concern—giving unions more power over individual workers. “These bills are about giving corporations the freedom to deny workers the right to form a union,” he said. Independent contractors can’t unionize under the National Labor Relations Act, so unions and the Democrats they support want to outlaw contract work, or at least deprive it of benefits that could attract workers. Democrats on the committee were united in opposition. This political opposition has deterred several gig companies from offering benefits. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has pledged more than $650 million a year to fund health insurance and paid time off if lawmakers would withdraw the threat of reclassifying the company’s drivers.

They laid out their demands in a rally on Tuesday, July 15, at city hall. "We think that a company that gets $45 million from the city since 2017 should be able to do better for the workers and the people of Baltimore who actually fill those contracts," said Jaime Contreres, the executive vice president of labor union 32BJ.

The Martz workers say they are grossly underpaid compared to their other transit counterparts. By how much we don’t know. Picketing wrapped up early on Thursday but said they’ll be back Friday morning at 4 a.m.

    Give women more choice at work this Equal Pay Day

    March 26, 2025 // One action politicians can take to benefit women is to give them more choice in the workplace so that they are compensated in a way that is most valuable to them. For example, some Americans, including many mothers, would prefer additional paid time off rather than additional pay for extra work. Currently, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires that covered nonexempt employees receive overtime pay for working overtime hours. Accumulating paid leave is not an option.

    Providence, nurses union reach new tentative deal in 6-week-long strike

    February 26, 2025 // The strike, which started Jan. 10, is the longest in Oregon’s health care history. Nearly 5,000 nurses walked off the job at Providence’s eight hospitals in Oregon in Hood River, Medford, Milwaukie, Newberg, Seaside and Oregon City and two in Portland. The strike also included nurses, physicians and other staff at Providence’s six women’s clinics in the Portland area and hospital physicians at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in southwest Portland. The physicians and clinic union members approved their deals but the nurses rejected the early agreement by more than 80%.

    Michigan University Hospital, union feud over parking spots

    January 28, 2025 // Labor unions typically bargain on behalf of employees over paid time off, worker pay and workplace conditions. But unions and employers also fight over unconventional issues such as the price of vending machine food and how many criminal offenses a teacher may have and stay on the job. Nurses prevailed last month in a struggle over parking lot protocols. The University of Michigan altered employee parking arrangements to create more spaces for patients. The Michigan Nurses Association in 2019 demanded that the university make more parking spaces available for nurses and requested to bargain over the issue.

But for too long, the influence of those public employee unions has been less about negotiating raises and sick leave and more about funneling taxpayer dollars and volunteers toward partisan political activity that almost exclusively benefits the Left. Government unions should re-focus their energy and resources on their intended purpose: working on behalf of public-sector employees so those workers can do the job the American people hired them to do.
