    Starbucks baristas to return to work after five-day strike

    December 27, 2024 // The strike shut down more than 300 locations, including some in the Los Angeles area, after more than 5,000 Starbucks workers walked out last Tuesday. The union representing the baristas, called Starbucks Workers United says it is ready to return to the bargaining table. Talks with the company had stalled over pay, staffing and scheduling.

    December 14, 2024 // Council members Mark Hugel and Vernon Tillage said City Council has been reviewing the draft ordinance, with Hugel adding that the next move is a closed session to finetune details before a vote. Tillage said a vote isn’t expected until after the newly elected council is sworn in. Virginia was one of a few states with a blanket ban on collective bargaining for public sector employees until 2020, when the Democrat-controlled General Assembly enacted a new law, effective 2021, punting the final say to localities.

    November 12, 2024 // Classes will be canceled Tuesday throughout public schools in Gloucester, Beverly and Marblehead, as negotiations between the teachers unions and school committees continue with no deal reached as of Monday evening. Teachers in the three North Shore communities returned to the bargaining table on Monday as they enter the first full week of a teachers strike.

    November 5, 2024 // When certified, Shedd Workers United/AFSCME will represent about 180 employees including guest relations, learning and community, development, and others, organizers said. Workers at other institutions in the city such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Newberry Library have also formed unions in recent years.

    October 27, 2024 // The labor group announced on Wednesday the drive to unionize 65 staffers in the company’s entertainment group, which has produced documentary titles like Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, What Happened, Miss Simone? and Hollywood Black. Organizers are targeting roles in production and postproduction with the effort and requested voluntary recognition from the company on Wednesday morning. The union claims that an “overwhelming majority” of the group has signed union cards supporting the drive.

Just yesterday the pair was castigated for simply handing out literature and trying to engage with workers in front of the medical center. Profanities and threats of attacks were met with a polite, yet bold, resistance.

    Kaiser mental health workers prepare to strike, this time in Southern California

    October 16, 2024 // The previous Kaiser mental health strike, which involved Northern California mental health workers, took place in 2022 and lasted almost 10 weeks. Those workers ultimately won certain concessions, such as higher wages and more hours each week to handle patient care duties such as charting and responding to emails. Southern California mental health workers say they are now asking Kaiser to match what their colleagues in the north of the state receive.
