PLA mandate to stay, with exemptions: OMB
June 17, 2025 // The Trump administration said Thursday that it supports the use of project labor agreements on federal construction projects when they are “practicable and cost effective.
Praise of Kamala Harris, Tim Walz written by nonunion staff during teachers strike
August 15, 2024 // In an internet post this week, the staffers accused NEA management of using people to take over the duties of union workers to compile an Aug. 6 endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris’ choice of former NEA member Tim Walz as her running mate. The NEA has been stuck in a labor dispute with its staff union for months. Sent through Progressive Newswire, the press release includes the name and email address of NEA communications specialist Staci Maiers as a contact. She said management froze her out of the inbox last month after she helped organize a July 5 picket line that shut down the union’s annual assembly in Philadelphia.
Opinion: Union Victories First, Job Losses Later
August 6, 2024 // But the UAW conveniently ignores its contribution to the job losses. The union halted work for a month at Deere in 2021, and the company acquiesced to a blockbuster contract. Employees received a 20% raise over five years, plus an $8,500 bonus and annual adjustments for cost of living. The strike paid off for union workers in the short term, but the increase in labor costs made layoffs more likely if harder times struck. You won’t hear about this latest turn from President Biden, who sent his agriculture secretary to the picket line to cheer on strikers in 2021. Mr. Biden calls himself the most pro-union President in history, and he happily claims credit for union wins.

Lawmakers Should Not Let a Lame Duck Pack the NLRB
July 28, 2024 // For instance, on her watch, Chair McFerran has allowed workplace discrimination to be weaponized for pro-union activities. This decision has subjected workers to traumatizing harassment, while simultaneously barring employers from intervening. According to a report by the Institute for the American Worker, McFerran’s NLRB has used Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to excuse “racist rhetoric, sexist harassment, and vulgarity in the workplace, as long as it takes place in the context of ‘union activity.’”

OPINION: Teamsters boss’ RNC speech reveals his precarious hold on members’ loyalty
July 11, 2024 // A March poll from Quinnipiac showed Biden with a mere 9-point lead among Michigan union households, a far cry from his 25-point lead there in 2020. The Teamsters union has had a front-row seat to this transformation. While the party affiliation and preferences of its members aren’t publicly available, the union represents a wide variety of working-class voters — the type of workers who have suffered greatly under Bidenomics, hit hard by soaring inflation and slow wage growth. On the other hand, these workers fondly remember the Trump boom years, which were the direct result of policies that the Teamsters’ leadership opposed, including the 2017 tax cuts and regulatory reforms that gave workers and job creators more freedom.
Ranking Member Cassidy Calls on Biden to Take Action in Gate Gourmet Failed Mediation, Avert Strike During Summer Travel Season
July 2, 2024 // A strike would disrupt in-flight and pre-flight services such as food and water for passengers and crew. “Disruptions in air travel will cause unnecessary uncertainty for families and airline workers alike,” wrote Dr. Cassidy. “To prevent severe economic consequences and a global disruption in air travel, it is imperative you use all of your available authority, including forming a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB), to resolve this matter and avert a strike. We need leadership.”

Commentary: Unions, Free Speech and Political Demagogues
June 12, 2024 // The NLRB ruled that union strikers’ “profane, vulgar, racist, and otherwise insulting language” is protected union activity so long as the speech stops short of threatening violence. The message is clear: If you are a political ally of President Biden, you can have all the speech you want. If you represent a company or industry that Mr. Biden scapegoats for political gain, you can’t express your views in the public square without the government accusing you of breaking the law.

Opinion | A Reckoning for Biden’s Lawless Labor Chief
June 11, 2024 // Mr. Biden has timed his appointments to the labor board to minimize resistance. He broke with tradition by not choosing a Republican to fill an open seat when the previous chairman, picked by President Trump, retired in 2022. Instead Mr. Biden waited until now to select a Republican at the same time he has renominated Ms. McFerran. He hopes presenting the two as a package will make it easier for vulnerable Democrats to approve Ms. McFerran. It’s an offer the Senate should refuse. Reapproving the sitting chairman would be business as usual in a Senate that has whooped through too many of Mr. Biden’s progressive nominees. The economy and the rights of workers will suffer if Ms. McFerran is confirmed again after her demonstrably lawless record.
Teamsters president seeks speaking slot at both party conventions
June 11, 2024 // Our thought bubble, from Axios' Nathan Bomey: Although the leadership of unions like the Teamsters and the UAW have historically been progressive, many of their members are conservative. Case in point: The UAW has endorsed Biden for reelection but has acknowledged that about a third of its members voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.
Ranking Member Cassidy Blasts DOL Retaliating Against Florida, Illegally Withholding Federal Dollars on Behalf of Labor Unions
June 7, 2024 // U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, blasted the Department of Labor (DOL) for illegally withholding $800 million in federal funding from the State of Florida as retaliation against the state’s recent efforts to protect workers from union coercion and abuse. This illegal action has serious implications for other states that are considering similar legislation.
