    Public employee unions took over Michigan. Now they’re eyeing Pennsylvania

    May 7, 2024 // Bad as this is for taxpayers, the union-backed legislators have made things even worse for workers. A new law requires government employers to provide unions with employees’ personal contact information within 30 days of hiring. Employers must update and resubmit this information every 90 days. Unions are thus given free rein to inundate workers with political or other material whether it is wanted or not.

    Federal Lawsuit Hits Guards Union of America for Illegally Forcing DC-Based Security Guard to Pay for Union Politics

    April 19, 2024 // Rosa Crawley, a DC-based security guard employed by Master Security, has just hit the International Guards Union of America (IGUA) Local 160 with a federal lawsuit, which maintains that full union dues, including dues for union political activities, are being illegally deducted from her paycheck. Crawley filed the complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia with free legal aid from National Right to Work Foundation staff attorneys. Crawley, who with her coworkers provides security services to the Department of Homeland Security’s “Nebraska Avenue Complex,” seeks to enforce her rights under the 1988 Right to Work Foundation-won CWA v. Beck Supreme Court decision. The Court held in Beck that union officials cannot force workers who have abstained from union membership to pay union dues or fees for any expenses not directly germane to contract negotiations. Nonmember workers who exercise their Beck rights are also entitled to an independent audit of the union’s finances and a breakdown of how union officials spend forced contributions.

    Michigan Security Guards Across Western Michigan File Petition for Vote to Undo Union Bosses’ Forced Dues Powers

    February 28, 2024 // According to the petition, the requested deauthorization vote will take place among “all full-time and regular part-time security guards…performing services for the Company…in and around the cities of Alena, Cadillac, Petoskey, Traverse City, West Branch, Flint, Bay [C]ity, [Big] Rapids, Ludington, Mount Pleasant, Owosso, Saginaw, Escanaba, Houghton, Ironwood, Marquette, Sault Ste Marie, Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon Michigan.” “UGSOA union officials have threatened to have everyone who does not join the union fired. Many of us are retired police officers, or military, working part time, supplementing our income by providing security for government buildings across Michigan,” Reamsma commented. “When Right to Work was in place, guards were never forced to join the union. Now part time guards are expected to pay the same high dues as full time guards and all guards must join or lose our jobs. We are thankful for the help of the National Right to Work Foundation for their assistance in navigating this complex process.”

    Michigan’s Economic Outlook Hit by Right-to-Work Repeal

    February 13, 2024 // This repeal makes Michigan the first state in 58 years to legislatively rescind these worker protections. Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt summarized today’s change: Over 150,000 individuals in Michigan made the free choice to leave their union since 2013. Having the government force those same workers back into the unions they freely decided to leave is the antithesis of freedom. It’s un-American. It should be noted that 71% of Michigan voters from union households oppose the repeal.     Despite Biden’s Efforts to Empower Unions, Membership Rates and Wage Advantages Fall to All-Time Lows

    January 24, 2024 // So, why have unionization rates and union wages been falling despite significant union-organizing efforts at places such as Starbucks, Amazon and Trader Joe’s, as well as President Joe Biden’s “whole of government” approach toward increasing unionization? Primarily, it’s because unions aren’t providing things that workers want or need. Many workers don’t like unions spending their dues on politics instead of representation, their not infrequent deception and coercion to gain support or their rigid structures that impede flexibility and prohibit performance-based pay. Meanwhile, by engaging directly with their employers, workers have been able to achieve stronger wage gains (albeit entirely erased by inflation), increased workplace flexibility, expanded benefits (such as paid family leave) and a multitude of educational opportunities.

    COMMENTARY: Good news: 2023 won’t mark a union revival

    January 3, 2024 // The decline of union membership has been remarkably steady over the last four decades. Since 2000, the year-to-year change in the unionization rate has been positive only six times, and those small gains have quickly been reversed. Moreover, the latest data show that unionization is increasingly concentrated in the government sector, especially local services such as K-12 education and public safety. Only 6% of private sector workers are union members.
