October 18, 2023 // Healthcare workers with the Allina Health System voted to unionize Friday in what is described as what is now the largest private-sector union for clinicians in the country. The company is based in Minneapolis but has clinics all across Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The Impact Of Doctors’ Reluctance To Unionize On Private Practice

August 18, 2023 // Unionization empowers individuals to collectively negotiate better working conditions, fair compensation and greater control over their professional lives. Unfortunately, the medical profession has seen limited progress in this regard. Driven by a deeply ingrained culture of autonomy and individualism, many doctors remain hesitant to join unions or professional organizations that advocate for their rights.

Doctors Council SEIU Local 10MD, which would represent doctors in Allina Health’s system, formally filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board on Thursday. That means members will still have to actually hold an election to determine whether or not to unionize.

Some of California’s best-paid public employees say they’re ready to strike. Here’s why

August 7, 2023 // Some of California’s highest-paid public employees are in an intensifying labor battle with the Newsom administration over staffing shortages at state prisons and hospitals that workers say endanger patients and staff. The union representing doctors and psychiatrists working in California correctional facilities said that 91% of voting members authorized a strike Monday. Non-competitive salaries, strenuous working conditions and an overreliance on higher-paid contracted doctors, make it difficult to hire staff physicians, said Dr. Stuart Bussey, president of the umbrella Union of American Physicians and Dentists.

March 1, 2023 // While their nurse counterparts may have the ability to join unions when they get into their field, doctors in Minnesota don’t. But now, one group is calling on physicians to make the jump and unionize.

Why a group of Allina Health Mercy Hospital doctors wants to unionize

February 17, 2023 // Less than 10 percent of doctors in the United States are members of a union. But physicians at Allina Health Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids want to join that group. They filed a petition for representation through Doctors Council SEIU, which already represents other health care workers at Allina Mercy, Unity and other hospitals throughout the state.

The House Passes a Bill to Give VA Medical Employees Greater Union Rights

December 20, 2022 // The VA Employee Fairness Act would grant medical professionals the right to bargain over scheduling and official time, and to file grievances over pay disputes. Physicians, dentists, registered nurses and physician assistants at the VA are hired under Title 38 of the U.S. Code, which prohibits collective bargaining over care and competency issues, as determined by the department’s secretary. During the Trump administration, that exception to collective bargaining was vastly expanded—and labor leaders and Democrats say, exploited—to include issues such as shift scheduling. Then-VA Secretary Robert Wilkie used it to ban Title 38 union officials from accessing official time altogether.
