DHL workers at CVG hub officially go on strike

December 7, 2023 // The hub's ramp and tug workers joined Teamsters in April after a year-long campaign to do so. The negotiating committee has been working with DHL since July seeking improved pay and working conditions. As of Dec. 3, DHL told the union further negotiations will not happen until after Thursday — but workers opted instead to go on strike that morning.

CFA votes to approve a union strike

November 2, 2023 // CFA-SLO Political Action Chair and History Professor Cameron Jones said the union is preparing for a strike now in the event that all negotiations fall through. While 95% of CFA members voted to go on strike, the union cannot legally strike unless bargaining fails, according to Jones. Currently, the CFA and CSU are in fact-finding, the second to last stage of bargaining.

Fresno Teachers Cheer as Union Chief Rips Up District’s Latest Contract Offer. Then Strike Vote Begins.

October 20, 2023 // Teachers have been working without a contract since June 30. Union officials say there are four major points of contention. FTA wants teacher salary increases tied to the rate of inflation, status quo on the district’s per-employee contribution to the health fund, smaller class sizes, and smaller special education caseloads. The union needs to stand firm on its demands, said Gromis, a 15-year teacher. Union President Manuel Bonilla drew cheers when he produced what he said was the district’s “latest offer. And I have a pen. Should I sign it, or should I rip it up?” he asked the crowd, who chanted “rip it up” and then cheered when he tore it in half.

Metro Transit workers, including drivers, overwhelmingly vote to authorize strike

September 14, 2023 // While some may be ready to strike, voting to authorize a strike does not mean a strike will happen. But it does give union leadership the ability to call a strike if it becomes necessary, the union said. "The members have the final say in that. They will tell us what they want to do. They have the final vote on the contracts," Timlin said. "It's really how far they are prepared to go on this. That's the reality." Workers are asking for pay raises to include the cost of living, safety solutions, better shift differentials and more one-piece runs. Negotiations with the Metropolitan Council started back in March and contracts expired at the end of July.

Kaiser Permanente workers authorize a strike as contract deadline looms

September 7, 2023 // When it comes to the union's demand for the same wage increase for everyone, Kaiser responded in their statement, "This would not reflect market labor costs and would prevent us from addressing fair market wages." Kaiser is urging employees to reject calls to strike and instead focus on caring for patients. While both sides say they're hopeful a deal on a new contract will be reached before the deadline, if they don't and the union strikes, it's unclear what that would mean for clinics and the patients that rely on them.

United Airlines agrees to give union pilots big pay raises

July 17, 2023 // At least on pay, the deal appears far better than one that United pilots rejected last November. Once the deal is approved, pilots will get immediate wage-rate increases of 13.8% to 18.7%, depending on the type of plane they fly, followed by four smaller annual raises, according to a summary on the union’s website. Over the course of the contract, pilot pay would rise 34.5% to 40.2%. Garth Thompson, chair of the United pilots’ union, called it an “historic agreement” that was made possible by the resolve of the 16,000 pilots.

    BACKGROUNDER: Employee Rights Act

June 26, 2023 // Sponsored by Rick Allen (R-GA) The Employee Rights Act of 2025 safeguards and strengthens the rights of American workers. It guarantees workers’ right to a secret ballot election, ensures they can work directly with their employer if they opt-out of union membership, protects worker privacy, allows workers to choose to fund union politics or not, provides legal clarity for small business owners and independent contractors, and guarantees fair representation for all American workers.

United Airlines pilots union moves closer to strike

June 5, 2023 // The strike vote comes weeks after United AIrlines pilots picketed major airports across the nation, demanding pay increases. Unions representing Southwest Airlines and American Airlines pilots have each authorized a strike this summer

Writers Guild Calls a Strike Authorization Vote

April 4, 2023 // “The studios need to respond to the crisis writers face. WGA members must demonstrate our willingness to fight for the contract writers need and deserve by supporting a strike authorization vote,” the Writers Guild of America West explained in a statement shared to social media on Monday. In keeping with the guild’s messaging in this round of talks that the stakes are existential for writers, the union further alleged that “the survival of our profession is at stake” because “over the past decade, the companies embraced business practices that slashed our compensation and undermined our working conditions.”
