Burlison introduces bill to stop automatic Union payroll deductions
July 31, 2023 // Missouri 7th District Representative Eric Burlison introduced the Paycheck Protection Act, which will establish transparency and protect the rights of federal employees by prohibiting labor unions from deducting dues directly from their paychecks. Labor unions, unlike other dues-paying membership groups, are allowed to deduct dues directly from paychecks. The Paycheck Protection Act would eliminate this practice by requiring federal labor unions to collect dues payments directly from their members. Burlison said the measure will empower workers with vital information about the exact amount of dues they pay, thereby promoting transparency, financial awareness, and informed decision-making.

George Washington University Medical Residents Vote To Unionize
May 1, 2023 // Of the 455 residents and fellows eligible to vote, 253 ultimately cast their ballot in favor of organizing a unit, with 16 voting no. (To win, the group needed a simple majority.) They’ll be represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR), an arm of Service Employees International Union (SEIU). CIR also represents the residents and interns at Children’s National Hospital and Howard University Hospital. The organizing campaign began around the fall of last year as Miller and other colleagues gauged interest amongst their coworkers and connected with residents at other programs who had led similar unionization drives. Before filing for the election, a majority (67%) of residents and fellows signed authorization cards to be represented by CIR. GWU declined to voluntarily recognize the union, prompting organizers to file for a ballot election with the National Labor Relations Board — which took place Thursday.

Workers at World of Warcraft studio Proletariat withdraw union petition
January 26, 2023 // Workers at Boston-based World of Warcraft support studio Proletariat (also known as Blizzard Boston) are pulling their petition with the National Labor Relations Board, and will not vote on a union. They announced their petition in late December, but withdrew the application on Tuesday. A representative of Communications Workers of America blamed management’s “confrontational tactics” for the withdrawn petition, claiming the company held “a series of meetings that demoralized and disempowered the group, making a free and fair election impossible.” Proletariat Workers Alliance was looking to secure the company’s current paid time-off plan, as well as flexible remote options, healthcare benefits, and ensuring transparency and diversity are top priorities.

Rochester school district under fire over transparency
July 11, 2022 // “The FOIA contains objective standards for what can be obtained through FOIA, and what can be withheld,” Delie said. “The implication that a private actor is influencing that legal determination is unsettling to say the least. The district has an obligation to respond to FOIA requests as provided by law, regardless of the preferences of those who may be mentioned in a record.” Delie pointed to Michigan Compiled Laws 15.232, which defines what is a public record, as well as 15.243, which provides for exemptions in some circumstances. He says the union has no right to challenge the district’s decisions on how to comply with the law, and it should not be afforded a pseudo-vote on what should be disclosed.
