Opinion: Better Capitalism Will Reduce The Need For Unions

January 17, 2025 // But now, slowly but surely, we see the pendulum starting to swing again. A new generation of corporate leaders increasingly recognize the downsides of shareholder primacy and the benefits of multi-stakeholder capitalism. Some companies are moving away from treating workers as replaceable widgets — as pure cost centers — and increasingly see them as the key to improving productivity and innovation, which are now the key drivers of long-term profit. Some notable examples in recent years include Delta Airlines, Home Depot, Costco, Best Buy, and JP Morgan Chase.

Shields is calling on Chippendales Entertainment to recognize Equity as Chippendales dancers’ representative and engage in good-faith negotiations to provide “world-class” wages and benefits fit for “world-class” performers.

Southern California Kaiser Mental Health Workers Enter Second Week of Strike

October 29, 2024 // The union added that one-fourth of the 1,508 mental health professionals hired by Kaiser’s Southern California region between January 2021 and September 2024 have already left their positions.

Opinion: Help! We’re Trapped in a Trader Joe’s Union

October 28, 2024 // But the union hasn’t been what many of our co-workers expected. The officers basically selected themselves. They then delayed negotiations with Trader Joe’s while forfeiting our annual bonus retirement contribution. Amid growing discontent in the store, the two of us attended a bargaining session in February 2023, which the union president invited all crew members to join. We were shocked at what we saw. We thought the union would focus on things that matter, like wages and benefits. Instead, union representatives negotiated over things like “pronoun pins,” which the company already provides. They demanded that Trader Joe’s cover abortion and “gender-affirming care.” The company’s response: The health plan already covers that.

From the Rust Belt to the Ports: A Warning About Extortive Union Demands

October 4, 2024 // Not all labor unions are ‘pro-worker.’ With 36 ports striking today, the International Longshoremen Association is threatening other jobs, “I will cripple you, and you have no idea what that means."

Color Of Change ordered to reinstate illegally laid off workers and pay back wages after NLRB Ruling

September 27, 2024 // Color Of Change, one of the nation’s largest racial justice nonprofits, illegally laid off workers in mid 2023, but the NLRB found that the organization, represented by Seyfarth Shaw, did not meet its obligation to notify and bargain with the union before taking action. It’s illegal for organizations to lay off workers after they unionize prior to winning a first contract, a period called status quo.

States are pushing back with anti-labor laws as union popularity grows, policy experts say

September 18, 2024 // Growing union organizing across the country has triggered an anti-labor legislative response in some states, but cities and counties are increasingly pushing back, a new report found. The report, released this month by the New York University Wagner Labor Initiative and Local Progress Impact Lab, a group for local elected officials focused on economic and racial justice issues, cites examples of localities all over the U.S. using commissions to document working conditions, creating roles for protecting workers in the heat and educating workers on their labor rights.

At What Point Does a Nascent Worker Group Become a “Labor Organization”?

June 27, 2024 // Key points of the legal analysis: The Regional Director applied the broad statutory definition of "labor organization" from Section 2(5) of the NLRA. The decision analyzed whether the petitioner met the three-part test for labor organization status: (1) employee participation, (2) purpose of dealing with the employer, and (3) dealing with terms and conditions of employment. The Regional Director found all three elements were met, even though the petitioner was a nascent organization that had not yet engaged in formal bargaining. The lack of formal structure (no constitution, bylaws, dues, etc.) did not preclude finding labor organization status for an incipient union. The Regional Director concluded the petitioner qualified as a labor organization and directed an election in the stipulated unit.

Fairfax Connector ground to halt for fifth day as union workers demand changes

February 27, 2024 // Early Monday morning, 7News cameras visited all three bus garages in Fairfax, Lorton, and Herndon, Virginia. In contrast to Thursday and Friday, the Fairfax location had no protesters when we arrived, while the Lorton and Herndon locations did have protestors out front. Before the discussion, dozens of unionized workers gathered outside Fairfax Fair Oaks Marriott in Fairfax, Va., where the negotiations are taking place with some chants being heard. The impact on services has left some on social media frustrated, many blaming Transdev and the county while others blamed the Union.
