Hundreds of union workers locked out of Mount Pleasant factory
May 12, 2025 // "We're steelworkers," said Mike Bilodeau, a staff representative for the United Steelworkers Union District 1. "We don't give up fighting. We don't give up wanting to work." The lockout began at 5 a.m. Wednesday, leaving 430 employees unable to enter their workplace. Delfield, which provides serving, fabrication, and refrigeration solutions, has been in contract negotiations with the union for two months.

March 21, 2025 // Compton said the biggest sticking points in the negotiations have centered around temporary workers and mandatory overtime on Saturdays. He said the plant does not currently employ temp workers, and the union would like to keep it that way. That’s because they want workers to be hired on by Cummins full-time, Compton said. Under the previous agreement, Compton said the workers are required to work up to 18 Saturdays each year or up to six Saturdays each quarter until they hit 18. He said the UAW is fighting to keep the cap on the number of Saturdays workers will be required to come into the plant.

Commentary: Why does the US have it in for gig workers?
February 9, 2025 // There’s no argument that the gig economy has surged dramatically, particularly since the pandemic. More than 20m new businesses have launched since 2020, the great majority of those representing side hustlers, independent contractors and freelancers. According to data reported in Forbes, an estimated 64 million Americans, representing 38% of the US workforce, did freelance work in 2023, which is up by 4 million people over the previous year, and contributed almost $1.3tn in annual earnings to the US economy. Is the IRS that fearful over the loss of tax revenues? As a business owner, I don’t pay employer taxes when I hire freelancers. But the freelancer is responsible for paying a “self-employment” tax when they file their tax returns, so if they’re doing what they’re supposed to do, there shouldn’t be much difference. Most states have similar tax arrangements. If a taxpayer fails to report those earnings, then that’s on them. They’re breaking the law and risk penalties or even prison.

September 25, 2024 // America already has too few people working. If the employment rate were the same as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic, 2.9 million more people would be working today. The last thing Americans need is another regulation that makes it harder to make a living and to afford the rising cost of living. Although the Biden-Harris regulation has only been in effect since March, and it’s too early to fully study its effects, the employment-to-population ratio dropped by 0.3 percentage points between March and July. This decline represents a loss of 700,000 workers.
