    September 19, 2024 // They’re cleaning staff trying to organize and join part of the union 32BJ Service Employees International Union, and they’ve been protesting the treatment of several of their fellow workers at American Dream. Among their grievances, 32BJ alleged that two people working at the mall as cleaning staff — Jose Terán and Luis Verela — were fired because of their union organizing efforts by HSA Cleaning, a company the mall contracted for cleaning services.

    Marion County Public Defenders want pay bump in first contract after unionizing

Employees say the shortage has led to unmanageable caseloads for public defenders and delays in the justice system for the individuals they're representing.     Chef Ann Kim’s Korean American Restaurant Will Close Following Unionization

    August 26, 2024 // Vestalia did not voluntarily recognize the union. Kim made her first public statement about the unionization push on June 9, writing on Instagram that she “firmly agree[s] that everyone deserves the right to a voice and a vote,” but that she felt Kim’s team could “come together” without a union. (The post has since been removed.) Later that month, food blogger Joe Rosenthal posted internal messages from Kim, her partner Conrad Leifur, and restaurant managers seemingly attempting to persuade staff to vote against unionizing.

    Audubon staff union announces 3-day strike

    August 23, 2024 // The Bird Union, represented by the Communications Workers of America Local 1180, plans to start a three-day strike Sept. 10, “in response to the nonprofit’s continued violation of workers’ rights under federal labor laws,” the union said. The planned strike marks the latest chapter in an ongoing dispute within the group, where management and staff union have struggled to finalize a collective bargaining agreement since employees unionized in 2021.

    State of the unions: 8 facts you need to know about unions in Colorado

    August 8, 2024 // Colorado is a modified “right to work” state because, under the state’s Labor Peace Act, workplaces with unions may hold a second election to become an all-union workplace. If at least 75% of eligible workers approve its Labor Peace Act election, the workplace becomes all-union, meaning every worker must join the union and pay dues. The act was passed in 1943 as a compromise between unions and business owners.  In 2023 and 2024 to date, nine Labor Peace Act elections have been held — six won and three lost, according to the Colorado Fiscal Institute.

    University of Illinois nurses authorize strike at UI Health on Chicago’s Near West Side

    August 8, 2024 // More than 1,300 University of Illinois nurses cast ballots last week, with nearly 98% voting to authorize a strike, amid a stalemate with management at the bargaining table. The nurses' union, the Illinois Nurses Association, said they've seen a large rise in assaults on staff in the last four years. They are demanding safer working conditions, increased staffing, and higher pay. The union said they have offered a number of proposals in an effort to reach an agreement on a new contract, but management has responded to only a handful, and most of them have been rejected.
