Those same factors might not favor Hollywood actors or writers, who are currently engaged in their own high-profile strikes, Masters said, noting that some of the companies involved in those sectors might be more motivated to try to break the unions. “Not all workers are equal in terms of their replaceability. I think that’s the touchstone,” he said, noting the 1981 strike by air controllers that ended in a mass firing by then-President Ronald Reagan as an example of what can go wrong for workers in a strike.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Running ‘Very Smoothly’
August 7, 2023 // The hospital made its initial payment of more than $17 million to an agency to provide replacement nurses in the event of a strike July 28. Three days later, training for the replacement nurses on the hospital’s unique systems, processes and technology began, according to the hospital. Several nurses who lined the picket lines along Somerset Street on Saturday told TAPinto New Brunswick they have heard reports that care has declined since their strike began. They said patients have had to wait longer to be treated. The hospital has added more than 200 nurses to the budget to adjust for volume and acuity since May 2022, and added more than 150 new nurses, net of attrition, since 2022, according to a statement from the hospital.

The United Mine Workers of America, the union at the center of the purported longest strike in Alabama’s history, asked Warrior Met Coal to allow the miners to return to work at the company’s four locations starting Thursday. The decision was announced in a Feb. 16 press release. “The status quo is not good for our members and their families,” said UMWA president Cecil Roberts in the statement. “I sincerely hope that Warrior Met leadership will accept this offer, get our members back to work, engage in good faith bargaining and finally sit down face-to-face with us to resolve this dispute for the betterment of all concerned.”
Union says it’s ready to continue negotiations as strike enters third day
February 27, 2023 // The union represents nearly 500 nurses, aides, respiratory therapists, housekeepers, cooks and other workers at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital, which are operated by Maui Health. Workers at the three facilities walked out Wednesday and began picketing after voting to reject Maui Health’s final offer. Maui Health has said that it has a contingency plan that includes staffing areas affected by the striking workers. “This staffing is provided through multiple sources with additional assistance available should the strike continue for an extended time,” the hospital operator said. Maui Health did not respond directly to questions of how many workers have been brought in during the strike and who is handling the striking workers’ roles. However, it emphasized again that it is working to make sure patient care continues.
