    Unionized doctors picket outside Allina clinics in first for Minnesota

    June 4, 2025 // Braving rain and willdfire-induced bad air, the physicians at times seemed unfamiliar with picket line practices: A SEIU staff member shouted out instructions on picketing — where to start walking and where to pivot back — before they started. More than once the group seemed to forget to keep moving and came to a standstill, while two people led competing chants at different paces, muddying what’s typically a clear call-and-response. But nevertheless, they got their point across. Physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are sure to become more practiced in blue collar labor demonstrations in the years to come as unionization increases. Just this year, resident physicians at Hennepin Healthcare and the University of Minnesota unionized with SEIU’s Committee of Interns and Residents, one of the fastest growing health care unions in the country.

    Chef Ann Kim’s Korean American Restaurant Will Close Following Unionization

    August 26, 2024 // Vestalia did not voluntarily recognize the union. Kim made her first public statement about the unionization push on June 9, writing on Instagram that she “firmly agree[s] that everyone deserves the right to a voice and a vote,” but that she felt Kim’s team could “come together” without a union. (The post has since been removed.) Later that month, food blogger Joe Rosenthal posted internal messages from Kim, her partner Conrad Leifur, and restaurant managers seemingly attempting to persuade staff to vote against unionizing.

    Back-to-work order issued for two major Canada railroads. Union will comply, but lawsuit planned

    August 26, 2024 // Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon order the lockouts to end just over 16 hours after they began because government officials couldn’t bear to watch the economic disaster unfold if the railroads remained shut down. MacKinnon noted the board’s decision in a post on the social platform X and said he expects the railroads and employees to resume operations as soon as possible. Businesses all across Canada and the United States said they would quickly face a crisis without rail service because they rely on freight railroads to deliver their raw materials and finished products. Without regular deliveries, many businesses would possibly have to cut production or even shut down.

    Houston janitors vote to authorize strike if pay doesn’t improve

    May 14, 2024 // Hundreds of Houston janitors are calling for change and threatening to go on strike if an agreement isn't reached between their union and cleaning contractors. Saturday, inside the George R. Brown Convention Center, janitors represented by SEIU Texas agreed to go on strike if their pay and benefits don’t improve.

    Opinion: PRO Act Just Gives Unions More Power

    April 24, 2024 // Big Labor bosses who desire more resources and power (often in order to steal them or direct them to radical political agendas) hope the PRO Act will complete an 80-year campaign to make America more like Europe, with the strikes, economic sclerosis, and socialist planning for which that continent is known. With the PRO Act having powerful allies in the White House and Congress, it’s time for opponents of Big Labor to take note.

    Everything You Need to Know About the Department of Labor Independent Contractor Rule

    March 12, 2024 // The DOL does not provide an analysis of how many independent contractors will actually become employees. Let’s say a company is contracting with 100 photographers, all of whom are affected by this rule: how many of those photographers will become employees? It’s clearly not all 100 of them. To unpack the potential benefits (and costs) on workers, we need some analysis into how many of those 100 freelance photographers would become employees. Another consideration for the benefits side of the equation is whether most independent contractors are currently working with small businesses or larger ones. This matters because, as I point out in a previous post, many small businesses do not provide healthcare insurance, retirement benefits, or maternity benefits to their employees. This means that the “benefits” differences between an independent contractor and an employee at a small business are smaller than expected.

    Beware the labor regs of March!

    March 11, 2024 // A new rule from the federal government meant to protect workers is set to take effect today, March 11. It will instead leave most workers worse off by limiting their options for employment. Businesses will likely pull back from hiring entirely in many cases because the rules make it too risky. The rulemaking in question is the Labor Department’s (DOL) worker misclassification rule. The stated intent is to prevent situations where employers exploit workers. The rule is extremely vague on when business activities trip the line to exploitation however. DOL essentially leaves it up to federal regulators to decide. The rules won’t change things overnight. Regulators will still have to pursue cases based on them and court fights are sure to follow. But today is the day the mischief will officially start.

    Dartmouth Basketball Players can now Unionize

    February 8, 2024 // The players were ruled to be employees of the school, meaning they can unionize. Not only will the players be able to negotiate their salaries, but also their practice hours and when they will travel to and from games. However, this would go against the NCAA’s amateurism rule, which states that athletes can not be compensated for competing in college athletics unless the money they receive is from scholarships and expenses. The problem is that Ivy League schools do not award scholarships for athletics meaning the Dartmouth men’s basketball team are essentially playing for free. Another problem is that these athletes are being overworked. According to the players, they testified that they were spending over 40 hours a week playing basketball. The NCAA only allows teams to practice 20 hours a week.
