Faculty at University of Illinois Springfield reach tentative agreement to end strike
April 22, 2026 // UIS said in an email to students last month that it was running a $19 million deficit in the current fiscal year. UIS accounts for 2% of all of the university system’s spending in the current fiscal year, according to the system’s budget documents. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign receives 44% and the University of Illinois Chicago 31% while the rest goes to the system’s administration and university’s hospital. UIS also receives only 3% of state funds allocated to the system. State lawmakers have been debating a new higher education funding formula that would allocate a greater share of annual funding to lesser-funded schools like UIS.

February 24, 2026 // A group of Springfield city workers have unionized due to a “need for a collective voice in shaping policies affecting City Hall employees.” Workers in the finance department, code enforcement department and law department came together to be represented by AFSCME Local 739,
OHIO: Springfield Local Schools suspends transportation services, breakfast program
January 7, 2026 // With support staff expected to go on strike starting Jan. 7, the district announced that all transportation services will be suspended for Jan. 7. The breakfast program will also be suspended starting Jan. 7.
Starbucks Union Says 30 More US Stores Are Joining Week-Old Strike
November 22, 2025 // Starbucks said the strike has caused minimal disruption to its operations, and noted that this year's Red Cup Day was the strongest in the company's history in terms of sales and store traffic. Placer.ai, a location data company, said Starbucks' foot traffic jumped 44.5% last Thursday compared to this year's daily average. Starbucks said only 49 of the 65 stores that the union vowed to strike last week experienced any disruption, and 29 of those have reopened.

CHICAGO TEACHERS UNION CUTS CLASS TO LOBBY, COSTING TAXPAYERS UP TO $141K
May 17, 2024 // Teachers can partake in political advocacy on their own time, but this day of action occurred during regular school hours and at taxpayer expense. It doesn’t help that most of the students they left behind are unable to read or do math at grade level, and could have benefitted from a normal day of instruction. Chicago Public Schools has seen steady budget growth combined with dwindling enrollment. CPS’ per-pupil operational spending is $24,132, up more than 50% from $15,878 in 2018. CTU held a similar event with students during the March 19 primary election when they took students out of class to hear from proponents of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s real estate transfer tax hike, were told how to vote and then marched to the polls. The tax hike failed.
Champaign-Urbana Public Health workers intend to unionize
September 29, 2022 // Nearly 100 Champaign-Urbana Public Health District employees signed a card in support of unionizing. The signatures are inching closer to the majority needed to join the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31 in Springfield, according to organizing member and CUPHD case manager/counselor Darya Shahgheibi.
UIS faculty vote to authorize a strike
April 22, 2022 // The union will file an intent-to-strike notice with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board (IELRB) tomorrow (April 21). The faculty could then strike as soon as May 2.
