January 8, 2026 // When Rep. Rob Menendez (D-Jersey City) was in the fight for his political life during the 2024 Democratic primary elections, two of the state’s most prominent and progressive-leaning unions, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council and 32BJ SEIU, chose to remain neutral in his race.

January 3, 2026 // Unions can sidestep PAC contribution limits and disclosure rules by setting up 527 organizations or super PACs. They can avoid accountability by transferring funds through multiple intermediaries, thereby obscuring the source and any direct association with the union. The result is a shell game that gives the illusion of independent political action. Despite member-facing claims that dues cannot be used for politics, Department of Labor filings and Federal Election Commission reports tell a different story. Union executives frequently use workers’ dues to further political agendas. Often, the money funds a litany of leftist causes, including abortion, “defund the police” advocacy and opposing school choice and, in cases like Mr. Spiller’s, quixotic Democratic campaigns. (About 99% of union-funded candidates are Democrats.)
Unions Winning Nearly 80% of Elections, But Fewer Elections are Held
January 2, 2026 // Unions also fared more favorably in elections in which employees filed a petition to decertify (vote out) the union—unions won 41% of those elections. When the company filed a petition to vote out the union, unions won 78%, a remarkable win rate considering that the reason employers file such a petition is because of objective evidence of employee dissatisfaction with the union. Among the most prolific filers, the Teamsters saw 195 election petitions to a vote, winning 71% of the contests. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) was an option in 152 elections and won 83% of them. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers won 89% of the 75 representation elections they contested.
New Jersey: ‘Billions of Dollars’
December 22, 2025 // Gonzalez and Asaro-Angelo are not the only people who have used the word billions. At the federal level, U.S. Congressman Bobby Scott of Virginia claimed in a January 2024 press release that misclassification was a nearly $4 billion per year problem—citing this research from, you guessed it, the Economic Policy Institute. But in December 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that since January 2021—after nearly four full years of the Biden administration prioritizing the issue of employee misclassification nationwide—it had recovered only about $41 million in back wages for some 28,000 workers.

Vincent Vernuccio. Kavin is a lifelong writer and editor who started as a freelancer in 2003 after a decade in staff roles. In 2019, she co-founded the grassroots advocacy group Fight for Freelancers, where she organized and educated thousands of independent contractors.

December 17, 2025 // Most notably, a pair of New Jersey teachers have filed suit against the NJEA and its former leadership, alleging that millions of dollars in mandatory dues were used for political activities—including a nearly $50 million governor’s race—without meaningful member consent. These allegations are serious. They speak not only to how decisions were made, but to whether educators had clear information about how their own money was being deployed. At the same time, the New Jersey Policy Institute has filed complaints with both the IRS and the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission, asking regulators to examine whether the union’s funding structures and political accounts complied with federal and state rules.
New Jersey’s GOP congressmen make rare break with Trump on collective bargaining
December 15, 2025 // New Jersey is one of the nation’s most heavily unionized states, and the state’s powerful unions frequently support politicians of both parties. Smith and Van Drew have received backing from the New Jersey AFL-CIO in recent re-election campaigns; during Kean’s 2024 campaign, meanwhile, the AFL-CIO chose to stay out of the race, which was seen as a victory for the congressman in a district that Democrats hoped to flip. Notably, though, none of New Jersey’s Republicans were part of the original effort to bring today’s collective bargaining bill to the floor in the first place. A discharge petition to force a vote on the bill got signatures from every House Democrat and five Republicans, but Kean, Van Drew, and Smith did not sign on.
New Jersey: ACR177 Joins SCR138
December 12, 2025 // New Jersey Assemblywoman Vicky Flynn has introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 177, which is a companion to Senate Concurrent Resolution 138 that Senator Declan O’Scanlon introduced last month. ACR177 and SCR138 would declare the proposed independent-contractor rule at the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development inconsistent with legislative intent.

November 17, 2025 // NJEA funneled general funds through Garden State Forward, Working New Jersey, and Protecting Our Democracy—all election-focused organizations that not only backed Spiller but also were headed by the NJEA president. These questionable activities landed NJEA in court with a lawsuit alleging that the union misled its members, including Dupont, who is a lead plaintiff.
New Jersey Education Association Under Fire for Promoting Antisemitism
November 14, 2025 // Its convention, held Nov. 6-7 in Atlantic City, featured a program, Teaching Palestine, whose lead presenter, Adam Sanchez, is affiliated with the Racial Justice and Organizing Committee, which has described the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel as “resistance” and blamed the attack on Israel.
