Amazon workers reject union in vote at North Carolina warehouse

February 19, 2025 // Amazon workers at a facility near Raleigh, North Carolina, overwhelmingly voted against unionizing on Saturday. Of the 3,276 ballots cast, there were 2,447 votes opposing the union and 829 in favor, according to the National Labor Relations Board. There were 77 challenged ballots, a gap that’s too narrow to change the outcome of the election. The results still need to be certified by the NLRB.

Teamsters Back Trump’s OSHA Nominee, But Dissent Emerges

February 18, 2025 // “OSHA and the DOL, under the leadership of soon-to-be Secretary Chavez-DeRemer, will continue to benefit from leaders who started in the trades and understand the risks facing working Americans today and necessary reforms and opportunities to protect them,” the Teamsters said in a statement Friday. Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU), a grassroots rank-and-file movement of thousands of Teamsters members, did not share as glowing of an opinion as the wider union. “Teamsters know bosses rarely care about our safety. OSHA is already too weak and toothless,” the movement said. “Now more than ever, we need to fight for ourselves.”

No, Virginia, there was no Amazon worker strike

February 13, 2025 // The “protesters” that did appear were likely Teamsters who worked for employers other than Amazon. These bogus holiday season announcements are a long-standing trick by unions. They bank on news outlets being short-staffed and on the lookout for quick, easy stories. Unions attempting, for example, to organize Walmart for several years running in the 00s would announce that major walkouts were planned for the post-Thanksgiving “black Friday” sales. On the actual day, reporters who bothered to follow up would be pointed to protests at a few select locations that had few, if any, actual Walmart employees.

Sanders and Hawley’s Interest Rate Cap Would Ban Their Union Allies’ Credit Cards

February 10, 2025 // They should have checked with their union boss pals before taking such a position. Many major labor unions have deals with banks to offer branded credit cards as a member benefit. Some of them can charge interest rates in excess of the 25 percent rate Sanders finds extortionate, and nearly all of them charge higher than 10 percent. One of the most common credit card partnerships for unions is with Capital One, which offers a Union Plus Mastercard. It is marketed as “Built for Union Members. Backed by Union Members,” and accounts are limited to active or retired union members or their families.

Thousands of Denver-area King Soopers grocery store workers go on strike

February 6, 2025 // UFCW Local 7 members voted by 96% last week to authorize the unfair labor practices strike. King Soopers, a chain owned by Kroger, with 121 stores in Colorado and Wyoming, has been negotiating a new contract since October. The current contract expired in January.

Unionized Grocery Workers Are a Sleeping Giant

February 5, 2025 // A coalition of UFCW Locals 7, 324, 770, and 3000 helped defeat the largest proposed grocery merger in US history between Kroger and Albertsons. Now these locals are collaborating on contract negotiations and sending support to the King Soopers strike in Colorado

While Sean O’Brien Attacks Credit Card Companies, Teamsters Make Millions from High-Interest Card

February 5, 2025 // O’Brien is likely fine with this apparent hypocrisy because the Teamsters get paid handsomely by Capital One to promote the card. Disclosure forms filed with the Department of Labor show that the Teamsters received from Capital One $1.28 million in 2023, $1.52 million in 2022, and $1.5 million in 2021.

Commentary: Who Is Big Labor, Anyway?

February 5, 2025 // If the Current American Plurality wants to hold together, it will need to find ways to support workers as a whole, not cheaply chase the union members that BLS and other data reveal to be unripe for recruitment by throwing more traditional members of the coalition under the bus. The Taft-Hartley Consensus approach to labor relations, which Republicans have advanced for 80 years, offers the opportunity for those workers who freely choose to organize unions to continue to do so while protecting the rights of workers who choose not to form unions or choose to work independently. It should not be cheaply abandoned in service to myths about whom the conservative movement is seeking to court.

Costco, Teamsters, reach ‘tentative agreement’ likely averting strike as company’s DEI controversy rages on

February 3, 2025 // The Teamsters are accusing the grocery club of not sharing its record 2024 profits – which doubled since 2019 - with its workers and have claimed Costco has engaged in "illegal and reckless behavior," including kicking union reps out of stores, preventing employees from wearing Teamster buttons and changing the locks on union bulletin boards. Talks broke down in January when Costco refused to reach a card check agreement. Card checks would make it easier for workers to join unions by eliminating secret ballots. About 85% of Costco's unionized employees voted to authorize a strike.

Scoop: GOP fight coming over labor unions

January 31, 2025 // The senator pitched his bill at a dinner Tuesday night with Teamsters president Sean O'Brien and a small group of Republican senators — Roger Marshall of Kansas, Jim Banks of Indiana, and Ohio's Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted, sources familiar said. "We look forward to advancing meaningful legislation for working people this Congress," Hawley's office told Axios.
