Trump and Harris, with starkly different records on labor issues, are both courting union voters

September 5, 2024 // By comparison, two days after taking office in 2021, Biden issued an executive order that established masking guidelines, and his administration made health and safety protocols on the job during the rest of the COVID-19 pandemic a high priority. Compared with the inaction by the Trump administration during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Biden administration has been more active in proposing health and safety measures. For example, in July 2024 it proposed rules designed to protect some 36 million workers from health risks associated with extreme heat. After a period for written comments, public hearings will be held on the bill. When Trump tried cutting OSHA funding for 2018 by approximately US$10 million, Congress blocked his efforts. The Biden administration is seeking a 3.7% increase in OSHA’s budget for the 2025 fiscal year.

Harris girds for battle with Trump over union workers and their Big Labor bosses

August 28, 2024 // Ultimately, the labor vote is likely to follow the candidate workers feel can best address the economic concerns of the working class. Harris will almost certainly win the labor vote, but what will really matter is Trump's ability to cut into her margins with appeals to working-class voters on issues like immigration and trade.

Shawn Fain’s DNC Bombast And Trump/Musk Lawsuits Show UAW’s New Political Power

August 23, 2024 // A company statement said market conditions have caused it only to delay its production plans for the plant. It went on to say, “The Company has not violated the commitments made in the Investment Letter included in the 2023 UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement and strongly objects to the Union’s accusations. In fact, the UAW agreed to language that expressly allows the Company to modify product investments and employment levels. Therefore, the Union cannot legally strike over a violation of this letter at this time.”

Open Rebellion Against Teamsters GP Sean O’Brien

August 21, 2024 // During the TNBC conference, Chris Silvera of Local 808 delivered a gruesome critique of O’Brien over his embracement of the pro Right-to-Work Trump. But more importantly, he also called on the members to make “the general president a one-term general president.” International vice president-at-large – John Palmer who was also present at the event received a great reception after being the first officer to openly lead the rebellion against O’Brien. Already following O’Brien’s fascistic speech at the RNC, Palmer announced he was seeking to build an opposition slate to unseat O’Brien and “send him back to the truck.” To the surprise of everyone, Joint Council (JC) 28 in the state of Washington headed by Western Region vice president – Rick Hicks, in a press release attacked Trump’s and Elon Musk’s union busting conversation, before endorsing Harris for president. The executive board of Local 186 led by Abel Garcia in Ventura CA became the first local of the largest joint council in the nation, JC 42, to also endorse Harris.

Commentary: Why Labor Strikes Are Likely to Take Off under a Harris-Walz Administration

August 14, 2024 // It is worth noting that the United Auto Workers (UAW) want to unionize the employees of Musk’s electric-car company, Tesla. Fain was paid $228,872 as head of the UAW in 2023; the twelve “top officers are paid in excess of the [sic] $200,000 and hundreds more earn six figures, putting them in the top 5 percent of US income earners.” It is also worth noting that the “total dues-paying membership of the UAW fell by 13,000 last year to 370,000, down from 383,000 in 2022.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average autoworker is paid $30.78 per hour and works 41 hours per week, adding up to about $66,000 per year.

Donald Trump Calls Tesla CEO Elon Musk ‘Greatest Cutter’ For Terminating Workers Who Want To Unionize

August 14, 2024 // “You’re the greatest cutter,” Trump said in a 3-hour-long Spaces event with the billionaire entrepreneur. “I mean, I look at what you do. You walk in, you just say: ‘You want to quit?’ They go on strike- I won't mention the name of the company, but they go on strike. And you say, ‘That's OK, you're all gone. You're all gone.” The former President was seemingly referring to the termination of about 30 Tesla employees early last year in what was allegedly a response to unionizing efforts at its facility in Buffalo, New York.

AB 1955 Causes Elon Musk to Pull Out of California

August 6, 2024 // SpaceX and X are undisputed juggernauts in the economy of California. SpaceX is located in Hawthorne, CA, outside of the city of Los Angeles. The company reportedly provides almost 7000 jobs and employs approximately 16% of Hawthorne’s residents. Musk’s social media behemoth X, formerly known as Twitter, has most of its offices in San Francisco, CA. Taking X out of San Francisco will add more strain to an already hurting city—46% of offices and 40% of retail spaces in parts of the city are vacant. With litigation filed against the state, the loss of two huge revenue and job providers, and most likely another mass exodus of families all due to the enactment of AB 1955, California is in for more economic hurt.
