US dockworkers approve 6-year contract, averting a strike
February 27, 2025 // The contract calls for a 62% pay hike over six years that would lift hourly wages at the top of the union pay scale from $39 an hour to $63 an hour. ILA President Harold Daggett, who served as the union’s chief negotiator, was quoted in the statement as saying the agreement is “the ‘gold standard’ for dockworker unions globally.” He remarked that it was a difficult contract to negotiate and even required a three-day strike last fall, but “We now have labor peace for the next six years.”
Second US port strike averted as union, employers reach deal
January 9, 2025 // The talks had been extended until Jan. 15 to hammer a deal on automation. Shipping industry executives, customers and analysts had been concerned that the parties would be unable to overcome their impasse, leading to a second ILA strike just days before President-elect Donald Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration. A three-day ILA strike in October had triggered a surge in shipping prices and cargo backlogs at the 36 affected ports. Longshoremen returned to work after employers agreed to a 62% wage increase over the next six years.

December 18, 2024 // The International Longshoremen Association (ILA), the union that represents dockworkers on the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico, went on strike briefly in early October. They won a whopping 62 percent pay increase but left unresolved a key issue: automation of the ports. The longshoremen oppose any further modernization, seeing it as an existential threat to their jobs. The problem is that American ports are some of the least efficient in the world, largely due to the lack of automation. The World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index does not have a single US port in its top 50 ranking for efficiency. Charleston and Philadelphia come in at number 53 and 55, respectively. The ports are keen to fix that and therefore oppose the union’s demand.

December 14, 2024 // The U.S. Maritime Alliance, or USMX, the organization representing shipping firms in negotiations, said on Thursday that such automation would improve efficiency and increase capacity. Those enhancements would benefit U.S. companies and consumers that depend on goods from abroad, the group added. “We need modern technology that is proven to improve worker safety, boost port efficiency, increase port capacity, and strengthen our supply chains,” USMX said in a statement.

Canada labour minister proposes new mediator for Montreal port workers strike
October 17, 2024 // Canada's Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon on Tuesday proposed the appointment of a special mediator for a 90-day period for Montreal port workers strike. MacKinnon said that there would be no strike or lock-out during the deadline negotiation period, according to a post on X. Talks between the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) and Montreal Longshoremen's union remain in a deadlock over wages.

October 8, 2024 // George Daggett, the attorney, said the case began after his cousin asked a Catholic priest for financial advice and had $18 million in union funds placed under the supervision of the same money manager who worked with Our Lady of the Lake Church in Sparta, New Jersey. "So at the trial, every time a mobster’s name was mentioned, the government had a big board, and they made a circle, [and] every time a mobster was mentioned, they put his picture up on this big board," he said. "The government’s case ended, and I took Father Cassidy’s picture and I put it in the middle of all those mobsters. So that's the kind of trial it was."

October 2, 2024 // Despite his eminent blue collar credentials, the union baron earned $728,000 last year from the ILA, plus another $173,000 as president emeritus of a local union branch, Politico reported. He previously owned a 76-foot yacht, the Obsession, and has been spotted by his members riding in a Bentley, according to The New York Times. The Justice Department, which has reportedly lost two cases against Mr Daggett, has accused him of being an “associate” of the Genovese crime family — one of the infamous “Five Families” of the US Mafia.
