September 13, 2024 // The ILA is one of the least aggressive unions when it comes to coastwide strikes, especially relative to its militant West Coast counterpart: the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), which orchestrated stoppages and slowdowns just last year to attain its desired contract. In many respects, then, the ILA is riding the wave of labor’s recent successes that were achieved through hard-line tactics. In August 2023, the Teamsters celebrated the ratification of a new agreement with UPS. A few months later, the United Auto Workers secured large pay raises and other benefits for its members after a 46-day strike against Ford, Stellantis and General Motors.

The mechanics at U.S. Airways were represented by the IAM. At the time, the IAM accused the Teamsters of “dividing already unionized employees with hollow promises.” The Teamsters and the IAM later reached a peace. They even announced in 2022 that they would work together to organize a broad swath of workers at Delta alongside the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. The Teamsters were to represent the airline’s mechanics, the IAM Delta’s ramp and cargo workers, and the AFA Delta’s flight attendants.

Earlier this month, Alphabet-owned Google laid off hundreds of workers on its hardware, voice assistance and engineering teams to cut costs. Other tech players to announce significant cuts include Microsoft and business software maker Salesforce, while retailers eBay, Levis, Macy's and Wayfair also plan to shed jobs. Most economists expect the labor market will slow this year, but predict the U.S. will avoid a recession. Job growth has proved resilient, with the country adding a robust 2.7 million jobs in 2023.
