Disneyland workers reach tentative deal with company, averting strike
July 25, 2024 // The bargaining committee previously accused Disney of having "engaged in multiple instances of conduct we allege are unfair labor practices, including unlawful discipline and intimidation and surveillance of union members exercising their right to wear union buttons at work." The union buttons in question depict a Mickey Mouse-style white glove raised in a fist. (The company has insisted that costumes worn by cast members are "a critical part of enhancing the experience of our Disney show.")
Unionized Science Museum workers await contract as cultural nonprofits face changing labor market
April 1, 2024 // Inspired in part by pandemic-era lay-offs, as well as record inflation, Twin Cities labor movements have seen an uptick in mobilization. Janitors, school teachers, university graduate students, plow truck operators, firefighters, nurses, rideshare drivers and coffeeshop baristas have all recently taken their arguments for better pay and working conditions to the public picket line, or threatened to. Museums have had a lower-profile in those labor efforts, but workers at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis and Science Museum all have unionized in the past four years with the goal of collective bargaining for employee-friendly contracts. Most of the Science Museum’s workers were laid off and sent home when the pandemic forced closures in March 2020, only to be gradually called back months later into a climate marked by social distancing and general uncertainty. Hazard pay for frontline staff in visitor services disappeared after a few months. Workers rallied and got it back.
Biden vows veto if Congress moves to repeal NLRB rule on contract, franchise workers
January 10, 2024 // The rule replaced a Trump-era regulation requiring companies to have "direct and immediate" control over workers in order to be considered joint employers, which was favored by business groups. "Reversing this rulemaking will prevent workers from exercising their right to bargain for higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions," the OMB said on Monday. "Too often, companies deny workers this right by hiding behind subcontractors, staffing agencies, and temporary agencies." The House Committee on Education and the Workforce approved the resolution for a vote last month. The federal Congressional Review Act allows Congress to repeal agency rules within 60 days of their adoption. The resolution only needs the support of a majority in the House and Senate to pass, but would require a two-thirds majority to overcome a Biden veto.
Labor board judge: Logan Square grocery co-op illegally fired 2 workers
April 11, 2023 // A Logan Square grocery co-op illegally fired two workers and disciplined others who participated in walkouts at the store, a National Labor Relations Board judge ruled Thursday. The Dill Pickle Food Co-op must offer reinstatement to the two workers it fired, administrative law Judge Arthur Amchan ruled. It must also pay them for any loss of earnings that resulted from their firings. The Dill Pickle, at 2746 N. Milwaukee Ave., must cease and desist from “discharging or otherwise discriminating against employees for engaging in protected concerted activity,” Amchan ordered. “The (unfair labor practice charges) were filed by our old bargaining union, the IWW, which is no longer our union. They were voted out by our current staff right now,” McCarthy said. “Management and our new union are actively working with one another right now to try and mitigate some of the issues that we have had in the past, and it’s been a very good relationship thus far.”
On strike: Clark University graduate workers walk out
October 7, 2022 // Less than a month after voting to authorize a strike, the union has had one bargaining meeting, during which, the union said, the university made it clear it would not be open to substantive negotiations. “We are campaigning for a contract that guarantees financial security and access to health care,” said William Westgard-Cruice, a Ph.D. candidate and member of the union organizing committee. "We believe that the administration will have to come to the table." The university and the union have reached tentative agreements in three of four broad categories, the university said, including management and union rights, appointments and work assignments, and discipline and grievance processes.
Hartford teacher files complaint over union representation
August 5, 2022 // According to the complaint filed by John Grande, “The Union breached its duty of fair representation when it refused to arbitrate a grievance on Complainant’s behalf due to the fact that he was not a member of the Union. Specifically, the Union’s First Vice President Corey Moses told Complainant that arbitration is reserved only for members of the Union.” The complaint alleges that HFT is violating state statute by not equally representing all members of the bargaining unit equally and that the union “committed a prohibited practice” by attempting to coerce membership through withholding services. Grande recently settled in federal court over a libel case in which he claimed a Hartford school principal defamed him by accusing him of threatening behavior. The case stemmed from Grande wearing headphones to block out noise because of his tinnitus. Hartford Board of Education,
