In its contracts negotiated in 2023, the union “protected and expanded” that clause, Bethany Khan, a union spokesperson, told Hotel Dive. For members of the Culinary Union, their technology-related worries go beyond robot replacements — encompassing everything from workflow-optimizing apps to artificial intelligence. And while the union’s contract language offers protections around how technology is used at hotels, it does not prevent companies from deploying new technologies in the first place.

July 31, 2024 // “The Committee on Education and the Workforce (Committee) is investigating attempts by the Biden-Harris administration and certain pension funds to leverage retirement assets for the benefit of organized labor. The Internal Revenue Code (Code) makes public pensions eligible for significant tax subsidies if, among other things, their benefits are part of a plan ‘for the exclusive benefit of [an employer’s] employees or their beneficiaries.’ The Committee seeks information to determine whether the law is being undermined by the Biden-Harris administration and violated by certain pension funds. … The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has an obligation to enforce the provisions of the Code to ensure that taxpayers are not improperly subsidizing a retirement plan that does not, in fact, comply with the Code’s exclusive benefit requirement. To the extent that CalPERS is using plan assets for the benefit of social or political causes, the plan’s tax status is no longer valid.”

They said the framework confirms “a joint commitment to respect the right of employees to form or join unions, to develop positive and cooperative labor-management relationships, and to negotiate collective bargaining agreements that will support workers in an era of rapid technological change.” AI has emerged as a wedge issue in a wide range of labor negotiations over the past year, including the now-settled strikes by Hollywood screenwriters and actors.
AFL-CIO And Microsoft Announce Deal For AI Training And Labor Neutrality
December 12, 2023 // The agreement will provide formalized training opportunities for union members and students on artificial intelligence beginning in the winter of 2024 and conducted by Microsoft’s AI experts. These trainings will give participants a deeper dive into the use of AI in specific careers, enabling them to utilize the technology rather than be replaced by it. The agreement also provides the AFL-CIO the opportunity to influence and participate in the development of new AI offerings from Microsoft.
