From Amazon warehouse to port strikes, shippers and the DOT are preparing for an unpredictable 2025

January 2, 2025 // In recent years, the logistics industry has become familiar with "black swan" events, the biggest being Covid, which brought the global supply chain to a halt. The lessons learned during the pandemic led to new digital solutions for companies to track trade and solve for the lack of communication and data sharing that contributed to massive congestion at ports. Those solutions will continue to play a major role in dealing with trade disruptions.

The strike against Amazon is over but Teamsters warn: ‘Stay tuned’

December 28, 2024 // The workers in Staten Island voted in favor of representation by the Amazon Labor Union in April 2022. However, even though the National Labor Relations Board certified that vote result, Amazon continues to challenge it in court and won’t recognize the win by a union. Amazon also does not believe that a vote by union members to shift from being represented by the ALU to being affiliated with the Teamsters earlier this year was legally binding. And while the Teamsters announced earlier this month that a majority of employees at San Bernardino signed cards saying they want to be in the Teamsters, there has been no formal vote held there.

Senator Sanders Issues New Report Unfairly Criticizing Amazon’s Workplace Safety Record

December 16, 2024 // Significant criticisms have been levied at Sanders over this investigation. For example, the report, which was drafted by Sanders’ staffers rather than safety experts, relies on outdated data and unverified anecdotes. It also ignores the significant investments and improvements Amazon has made since 2019 to enhance worker safety and health. Additionally, Sanders’ investigation and subsequent reports have been conducted and issued without any involvement from other members of the Senate HELP Committee, indicating that no other Senators on the committee agreed with the approach taken by Senator Sanders.

A year later, where does the UAW’s southern organizing campaign stand?

December 11, 2024 // That's where many auto manufacturers, both foreign and domestic, are locating their plants in recent years, and that trend will continue if it means automakers can pay less for labor. In 2023, the UAW's membership shrunk to about 370,000 members, the lowest number since the Great Recession. "The rule in labor organizing is, you have to organize the critical labor market," Schurman said. But the UAW also must prepare to play the long game, even if it means losing elections on the initial try.

During the protests, workers will demand that Amazon pay fair wages to employees and commit to environmental sustainability efforts. Workers will also call on the company to pay their fair share of taxes as well as respect employees' rights to unionize.

Amazon and Elon Musk’s SpaceX challenge labor agency’s constitutionality in federal court

November 20, 2024 // Attorneys for Amazon and Elon Musk’s SpaceX argued in a federal appeals court Monday that the National Labor Relations Board’s structure is unconstitutional, advancing a legal fight that may last into the Trump administration where Musk is expected to oversee bureaucratic cost-cutting. A panel of three judges at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans heard separate oral arguments in the SpaceX and Amazon lawsuits, which the two companies initiated after the labor agency filed complaints against them in disputes about workers’ rights and union organizing.

NLRB Seeks to Cancel Debate on Unionization

November 15, 2024 // Dissenting Board Member Marvin Kaplan, however, points out that the NLRA “favor[s] uninhibited, robust, and wide-open debate in labor disputes,” and the Supreme Court, Congress, and the Board have all recognized the legality of employer speech rights during organizing campaigns, including the use of captive audience meetings. Kaplan highlights that past efforts by the Board to restrict non-coercive speech by employers have routinely failed.
